What is this weird rib pain

I've had rib pain on and off for a few months now. It's right in the middle of my upper abdomen, under my breasts. It feels like a constant throbbing, sometimes burning and paracetamol doesn't touch it. Sometimes it radiates down my ribs either side. Sometimes it feels like a bra is digging into me. It doesn't feel like heartburn.
Any ideas? I will go to the gp but I have health anxiety so I'll be worrying about it in the meantime.

Google costochondritis and see if that rings a bell. But do go and get it checked

rainbowbaby2 · 15/05/2024 18:11

Hmm I'm not sure. It doesn't seem worse when moving or breathing it's just constantly there. I guess it still could be. It's come on again after I had a bout of diarrhoea on Friday. Might have to call the gp tomorrow.

I've had this since January. Eventually went to my GP a month ago. I was sent for a chest xray which shows fractured ribs...absolutely no idea how it happened but it is slowly improving. Best to get it checked if it's been going on for months.

Mines been since December thinking about it. It got better but has come back. My toddler does love to kick me when he's in our bed.

Is it a residual shingles pain? I had shingles in that area which left residual pain.

Could you have gallstones? My gallstones started out like that and I thought it was my bra being too tight and hurting me until I had a horrendous attack and I thought I was dying. The pain is sooo bad. Does it come after eating like a few hours? And then linger?

RifRafia · 15/05/2024 19:47

Sounds very similar to my symptoms which turned out to be gallstones.

rainbowbaby2 · 15/05/2024 20:18

I have wondered if it could be gallstones. I had my gallbladder checked a couple of years ago and all was fine as I was getting pain in the same area, it kind of went away but now it's back 10x worse. Happened as soon as my last pregnancy ended.
It's still there now, it seems to be continuous but gets worse throughout the day I guess because I'm eating? Currently sat with a wheat bag, not that it's helping at all

My gallstones flared up around 12 weeks after I had my DS. Try an experiment and just fast for say 15-16 hours and see if the pain subsides. I find the only thing that helps with my pains (I also have fibromyalgia) is a really hot bath, as hot as you can stand it. It's like it magics the pain away. You could also try buscopan, if it's biliary pain it will help and if its not biliary pain you have nothing to lose by trying it.

Went to the gp. Was useless. Didn't even have a feel or like at my ribs/stomach. Just prescribed omeprozole saying it's indigestion. I'm pretty certain it isn't that.

Sounds like costochondritis. I suffer with this on and off and feels the same as you've described. When it gets bad it's horrific pain. Good way to test is if you gently feel underneath collarbone and around the sternum if it feels tender to touch you've got costochondritis. Hope that helps, it took me a few doctor visits to get the diagnosis

Lucy377 · 16/05/2024 10:43

You might be surprised what way stomach acid affects you. Take the Omeprazole, it might take 2 or 3 weeks for the symptoms to go away.

rainbowbaby2 · 16/05/2024 15:06

Now it's moved over to my left rib and round my back. It's agony. Paracetamol and ibuprofen aren't touching it whatsoever. Maybe you're right and the omeprozole will help after a few days.

Costochonderitis. I've suffered with it off and on for 5 years. Pain is worse at times, then gets better for a while.

I was tested for GERD when it started but was finally diagnosed a few months later. I was given gabapentin for it.

Boredofmyguts · 16/05/2024 18:15

I had really bad rib and back pain when my acid reflux was at its worse.
