Just starting mini-pill today, have some questions

There is no break in the pack like the one I had before (about 10 years ago) so when do you bleed?

Is there a way to avoid bleeding (like when you had a break you could run 2 packs together)?

with the mini-pill you may bleed sporadically throughout the pack (breakthrough bleeding) or with some e.g. cerazette you may not bleed at all (like me . There is no way to tell how your body will react to it so you dont know what happens till you start taking them - it can also take a few months for your cycle to settle after taking the mini-pill and there isnt really any way to intentionally stop the bleeding as most of the mini-pills dont actually stop you ovulating like the combined pill does.

Have been advised to take it to get some control over my periods though, don't get it???

Forget having a regular cycle on the minipill! I am on Cerazette, and would have lots of sporadic bleeding through the month, then months with no period at all!

loopylou6 · 03/04/2008 18:16

The mini pill will not regulate your cycle,i am on cerrazette and am getting worried with the lack of bleeding TBH, is there any reason why you cannot take the combined pill? i used tobe on microgynon 30 and thatw as fantastic for regulation

Nymphadora · 03/04/2008 18:23

thats what I am on.

Have regular cycle (ish) just very heavy

Can't take combined due to BP and migraines

i took cerazette for 3 months after i had my last baby and only had 1 period in that time. I then had an implant fitted(which contains the same hormones) and i havent had a period since. That was over a year ago now but Im quite hapy with not having to bother with all that anyway

Nymphadora · 03/04/2008 18:50

don't want anything permanent. Not sure how I will be with hormones as I get v bad PMT too

My sister was on Cerazette for 6 years & never had a period while taking it. She came off it just before Christmas, and her periods returned to normal as soon as she stopped the pill.
I like not having periods too. When I do suddenly get one out of the blue, it throws me though!

fiodyl · 03/04/2008 19:40

i wanted something pemanent that didnt rely on me remembering to take it/take it at the rght time/not being ill and throwing it up or not absorbing it!
reasons for this is after 7 years of no problems on the pill i unexpectedly fell pregnant twice in 11months while on it!

emma1977 · 03/04/2008 22:17

Cerazette is very good at inducing a state where you have no periods at all or occasional spotting- although it can take up to 6 months to achieve this.

There is no reason to be concerned if you don't get any bleeding- it doesn't signify that anything is wrong!

Nymphadora · 05/04/2008 18:05

Don't want bleeding!

Going on holiday in summer and really don't want period when I am away. First time meeting bfs family and will be in Caribbean!

I have taken Cerazette for 2 years now with no bleeding at all! Suits me just fine

missymum · 05/04/2008 20:37

hi my gp has also suggested cerazette to me. other than bleeding, has anyone found they gained weight as a side effect? just wondered as i dislike the combined pill for this reason, thanks

Seona1973 · 06/04/2008 12:41

I have actually managed to lose weight on cerazette whereas when I was on femulen (another mini pill which gave me periods every 2 weeks!) I had a huge appetite and couldnt stop eating.

beaniesteve · 06/04/2008 12:47

I was on Noriday and I had 5 - 7 day 'periods' every month. It's certainly a myth that the mini-pill stops you from bleeding.

emma1977 · 06/04/2008 16:35

Its true that some women have normal periods while on he mini-pill, but the majority will have intermitent spotting or nothing at all.

If you really want to avoid a period while on holiday, you can still use norethisterone to prevent unexpected bleeding while on holiday- ask your GP in advance.

mrschop · 06/04/2008 17:45

I have a question - the FP clinic gave me the mini-pill, as I have migraine with aura so combined pill no good. But the pack mentions migraine as a reason to discuss use with your doctor. Is it safe to use? Was going to speak to the GP about it before starting it. Sorry Emma1977, I was hoping you'd pop up on this thread and save me a trip to the dr!

emma1977 · 06/04/2008 18:07

Absolutely safe to use.

It's the oestrogen component of the combined pill that increases your risk of stroke if you have migraines, which isn't present in the mini-pill.

mrschop · 06/04/2008 18:21

Thanks very much - bit cheeky to ask you, but saved me a trip to the GP (not that easy with 2 babies, and I already feel like their best customer!). Thanks again.

beaniesteve · 08/04/2008 11:29

"Its true that some women have normal periods while on he mini-pill, but the majority will have intermitent spotting or nothing at all"

My doctor was very concerned when he discovered I was still having 5-7 day periods. He told me that perhaps the pill was not protecting me enough!

When I changed practice I mentioned it to them and they seemed to think my other doctor was wrong!

Perhaps I am unusual in that I carried on having fairly heavy periods while on the mini-pill but the new practice didn't seem to think so.

Nymphadora · 08/04/2008 18:50

don't say that, I am on day 6 and usually only have 3 (very heavy, don't-leave-the-bathroom type ones)

OP posts:
emma1977 · 08/04/2008 21:45

Beaniesteve- You are in the minority but not abnormal!

NorthernLurker · 08/04/2008 21:50

beanie - I had 5-7 day periods when I was on the minipill (Norgestron). I took it for five years after the birth of dd2 and I assume it was protecting me fine as i did not become pregnant - when we wanted ttc I stopped the pill and got pregnant the next month. I've been taking it again since dd3 was born and so far no period - but I am still breastfeeding so I don't know if it's that the pill which causes no periods. Can't say I'm bothered either way

user1498838066 · 04/09/2017 11:44

hi im on noriday for 3 months nearly and periods are getting lighter but have one a month still lasting from 2 to 4 days will they stop
