Has anyone needed more than one course of antibiotics to clear a chest infection?

I went to my GP on Wednesday and they said I’ve got a chest infection. They gave me a five day course of amoxicillin. I finished them this morning but my chest is still awful and my cough is worse. I’ve still got a temperature, and feel wiped out. I don’t know if it’s worth going back or just ride it out.

Go back, get checked, it’s not uncommon to need a different type

CMOTDibbler · 06/05/2024 11:47

Yes, dh once had to be tried on 5 different antibiotic courses before they found one that worked

i Know people hate hearing ‘there’s something going around’ but at the moment I know a fair few people who have had this and are raging the first set of antibiotics didn’t clear it up. I don’t know if it’s the added pollen issue this year or what, but I know so many people struggling

Ds was on antibiotics but it took 4 courses of a different antibiotic each time before the doctor found the right one.

yes I have, and yes go back.

katebushh · 06/05/2024 13:19

Yes.

I'm in the middle of a second course at the moment. Five days of amoxicillin and prednisolone didn't really work so I had a chest x-ray and there was still a lot of infection present. Currently taking clarithromycin, seven days of the 500mg tablets. Feeling much better already, so glad I went back to GP.

Yourinmyspot · 07/05/2024 09:23

Thanks all, I’ve got an appointment for later today.

I had an appointment this afternoon and she said my chest is no better and I did right to go back. She said it’s right at the bottom of my lungs. I’ve been given Clarithromycin this time (which is horrible) and some steroids. Just feel exhausted I’ve had a temperature of at least 38 for over two weeks now and I’ve completely lost my appetite, hopefully the steroids might make me more hungry.

Glad you’ve been seen. Try to take it easy. You should start to feel a little better soon

caringcarer · 07/05/2024 18:26

In the past I've had 7 days followed by a further 5 days to clear a chest infection up.

DrJonesIpresume · 07/05/2024 18:29

Yes, my dd quite recently. She had two lots and a course of steroids as well.

GerardWay123 · 07/05/2024 18:33

I've had the chest infection and antibiotics. After no improvement I went back to GP today who said I now have laryngitis (I can hardly talk). She said it piggybacked on to the infection. No more treatment even though I'm still violently coughing but she is arranging for me to have a chest X-Ray.
I just want a decent night's sleep.

ColinRobinsonsFart · 07/05/2024 18:36

Yes - recently had to have a second course and steroids.

And even after the second lot I wasn't better straight away - took a couple of days to start feeling better after I had finished the drugs.

I did consider going back ( again)

wavingfuriously · 07/05/2024 18:54

Yes, me! very similar finished a course of amoxycillin that didn't really help. Just been to GP today and was prescribed doxycycline quite big dosage which just started today. Secretion burbles in chest and going to have x-ray soon. GP did mention an inhaler...
Hacking cough , tired out. Good luck to us.

Vegemiteandhoneyontoast · 07/05/2024 18:56

Years ago I got a terrible chest infection after developing a sensitivity to dust mites and it took three lots of antibiotics to clear it up. It was horrible so I hope you get sorted soon.

Nat6999 · 07/05/2024 19:18

I had 3 plus steroids & inhalers when I had pneumonia last winter.

Yourinmyspot · 09/05/2024 08:07

Finally feeling better this morning, cough is less and looser and after 18 days of a temperature of 38 or above was only 37.7 this morning. Chest still tight but I feel a lot better in myself new antibiotics and steroids seem to be working.

i hope everyone else who is suffering start to feel better soon too.

Yep, 3 ×7 day courses plus a course of steroids to clear it (then developed further issues). I'm still not 100% 2 months on but functioning now.

thurstonthethird · 09/05/2024 08:14

Antibiotics are a bit trial and error sometimes, they don't always get the right antibiotic for your infection the first time.

Tel12 · 09/05/2024 08:14

Yes, I know several people who have had 2 courses plus steroids to shift it. There's definitely something going around.

Onand · 09/05/2024 08:18

There’s a lot of Covid at the moment which is giving people chest infections that are very slow to clear up, meds aren’t touching it. Keep an eye for other symptoms, I know someone who had a liver damage caused by the same infection. Hope you’re feeling better soon OP.
