DD going into hospital to have a closed hip reduction

HI i was just wondering if any of your los have had this done, my dd is only 5 months and they have said if the chr doesn't work she will need a bigger operation. I'm really really scared about the full thing and worried about how she will cope with a cast on - suppose i'm just looking for someone to say it will all be ok. She now looks tiny - too tiny to have an operation.

Hiya, just seen your message on here. My DS had a closed hip reduction when he was 1 - he is now nearly 6 and he is fine. They honestly get on brilliantly in their plaster - DS used to crawl around and pull himself up on the furniture! Obv your DD will be too little for that! If you want to speak to other people go on the STEPS website ww.steps-charity.org.uk - you can get LOADS of advice etc on there. I only discovered it after DS had finished in his plasters. hth

In have looked after a baby for nearly a year now that had a closed him reduction, hip spica cast then brace, she was 7 months old, she is now 15 months old and taking her first steps!

We all coped very well, obviously I had her most of the time as I mind her full time, but it was easy to accommodate and make a few changes.

Do you have a carseat, as they won't leave you leave hospital without a correctly modified one. I have one if you are interested.

Whereabouts are you having it done, where do you live? If you have any questions ask away!

yeah, meant to ask where is she having it done. My DS had it done at Southampton General - Mr Clark.

Hi Well thats the op been done - we have had the spica for over a week now and although lo is completely adjusted to it i'm still a bit unsure at points. Nappy changing is a pain - and i'm still without a buggy, waiting on one being delivered today.

Everything went fine on the day - the closed reduction was successful so we don't need the open reduction at the moment which is a releif. Dr has said she will need spica on for 6 months which is a bit of a shock but cast will be changed every 6 weeks and progress reviewed each time.

The op was done at crosshouse hospital by dr short. we have been seeing her since lo was born. Lucky the hospital have carseats so they have given us one while lo is in her cast.

Lo was not crawling before cast went on but so do you think she will just learn to crawl with cast or do you think it will hold her back.

Alibubbles if you don't mind me asking - how long was the lo you care for in the spica and then brace - no one has mentioned a brace to me is this normal when they come out of spica.

Bump - dd had CDH at birth and wore a pavlik harness for 13 weeks which corrected the problem. Not sure if this is what people mean by the brace. This is done before any surgical intervention.

Glad to hear you are coping. We go back for a check up on 15th June and I'm terrified her hips may have deteriorated.

My friend had to wear a cast and didn't crawl, rather shuffled about on her bottom.
