My ds has just shut his finger in the shed door - what should I do?

Its a bit cut, just washed it, when it was just done the finber looked dented, but looks a bit better now just a bit swollen, He can move his fingers ok so don't need to take him to Dr.

Does anyone have any advice? Should I put ice on it?

Ice, some nurofen if he'll take it and I always use arnica cream for bruising. Works a treat.

Just run under cold tap for ages. Then lots hugs and cuddles and a chocolate (for DS not you!)

You could put a bag fo frozen peas on it too, or if you have witchhazel, use that - it is great for swelling. If you have arnica tablets, they are great for the shock. I think a nice little treat and a cuddle is also called for.

This all sounds positive. I was hoping not to open the thread to find that his finger was no longer attached to his hand. (This happened in our garden to a friend's daughter. )

In your situation, I would watch him to make sure that the swelling comes down and that he continues to be able to move his fingers. Ice may help but if he finds it uncomfortable then I would not persist.

Try not to feel badly. Accidents happen!

Thanks for all your advice. I was worried because the finger looked really dented, but has gone back to its shape now and he can move it ok. Spoke to someone at NHS direct who was helpful, but was hard to find any good first aid sites on the internet which dealt with these sort of minor accidents. Does any know any good sites for future use?
