DS had been complaining of headaches for a couple of days then on Thursday night he had temp of 39. I took him to the pead on Friday who did the normal ears, eyes, throat, chest test and declared him OK but to keep an eye on him. Last night whilst standing up from the sofa he collapsed and said his legs hurt. This morning he couldn't walk. We called the pead who said take him to the Emergency section of the hospital and get blood tests. 5 hours later DH and DS are still there waiting for the last set of results to come through. DH has rung and said that the results appear to be all clear but I can' help but worry. We had to cancel his birthday party which was set for today but essentially DS is in great spirits, no temp, no headache just the leg thing - any suggestions? Please?

Irritable hip(s)? With ds1 it started as an ordinary virus and a couple of days later was unable to do more than hobble. It got better after about 4 or 5 days.

There's been a real spate of this virus here. A know of at 3 kids in our village who have ended up at hospital to be told it's a muscle virus and will pass within a week. Ds's pal(6) shuffled through to his parent's room last sunday morning on his bottom as he couldn't walk. Ended up at local hospital and sent to children's hospital.

Scary but apparently nothing threatening- never even got medicine.

My MIL lost the use of her legs at around this age.
Just woke up one morning and they would'nt work- dr had no ideas why.
Eventually it came back, and she started dancing to build up her muscles again....went on to be professional dancer.

Albert how is DS doing? Any improvement yet?

MIL said her ds1 also had a similar thing whne he was 3yo, but it lasted just 24 hours.

My ds has had an irritable hip in the past which was caused when the virus he had from a bad headcold, travelled to his hip joint inflaming it and resulting in him not being able to walk/move it for several days.
Hope he's better soon.

{{{hugs}}}} Hope it gets better for him soon, not good for him.

When I was young this happened to me, I tried to get out of bed one morning and couldnt walk, my legs just gave way, thankfully it was just a virus and went within a day or two, hope it's as simple for you.

I know this one! This just happened to my 10 year old. It's most likely transient synovitis - the hip joint thingy is inflamed due to a reaction from a virus or somesuch. It'll go away on its own, although it's taken a couple of weeks for my son's to get better (he gets especially sick though and things tend to take a while for him).

They did the blood test to make sure it's not an infection and might do x-rays to see if it's something with the bone - both are serious things which would be need to be dealt with immediately. The doctor recommended crutches to help with walking and staying off it in the main to not irritate it further. And ibuprofen for the pain.

Hope all goes well! And happy birthday to him.
