hiya, i took the morning after pill about 86hours after sex due to chemists being closed. i told the pharmasist it was within 72 hours in the hope it will still work. so i was wandering if anybody knows how effective it is after 72 hours. quite worried as i have 3 ds's aged 3.6, 1.6 and 7months.

The longer the interval between sex and taking it the less effective it is, it is actually only licensced up to 72 hrs although GPs can prescribe it after this time.
If memory serves the effectiveness is probably 30-50 % after 72 hrs and decreases with time.

what time are you at now?

you could still have a coil put in, up to 5 days after unprotected sex. A lot of GPs don't do it so I would go straight for family planning if you can.

How effective is the PCP?
It prevents about 95 per cent of pregnancies from developing if it is taken within 24 hours of unprotected sex. This decreases to an estimated 85 per cent if taken within 24-48 hours and to 58 per cent if taken within 48-72 hours, so it is important to take the first dose as soon as possible.

Cut and paste from Netdoctor. If your period doesn't come when expected you should go to see your GP as soon as possible.

For future reference incase of any inadvertentness you can have the coil fitted up to 5 days after - family planning clinics better than GPs at doing this. Perhaps get one fitted any way?

In any case, I hope you get the outcome you want. Sounds like you have an awful lot on already.

Tasha - have you got anyone to look after the kids whilst you pop to your local family planning clinic or your docs for a chat? You probably don;t need the stress of not knowing and it sounds like you could do with some proper reassurance or some good future contraceptive advice sweetie. I hope you aren't pregnant and that you are ok

Sorry for hijack Tasha - but pmsl Oops . He's the steroid withdrawal dog that you saved

I so know what you mean Oops... but I always remember you as I am truly indebted
He is my lovely boy. He is awaiting his next accupuncture session on Monday and will be all chipper again after that.

winestein · 29/03/2008 22:01

Thanks Tasha - I really hope it works out for you

Must be about a year and a half/2 years now I guess? He's on a cocktail of previcox, glucosamine and accupuncture every 3 weeks and he is doing ok on it (but I have to try and control occasional bouts of bowel bleed for obvious reasons) and have to restrict his exercise (he loves a good rough and tumble with other dogs but I have to book the accupuncture for the next day if I let him!)

He's 9 now though and a KC pedigree (i.e getting towards proper old man status for the breed). He's spread out like a fat pancake in front of the stove as we speak - no doubt dreaming of the sausage my mum gave him earlier today
