conjunctivitis probably

(hello )

berolina · 28/03/2008 09:16

ds1 has had conjunctivitis for oh about 10 days now. Sticky eyes in the morning, that's it. He is fine with it and it is supposedly self-limiting. Our dr prescribed antibiotic drops but have not used them as it seems to me to be like (as the Germans say) shooting cannonballs at sparrows.

FrannyandZooey · 28/03/2008 09:19

do I just leave it? will it get bad? I can't get to gp today

OP posts:

I would leave it tbh, unless you find the stickiness isn't going away or it's hurting. It should sort itself out, apparently. That said, ds1's is dragging on a bit.

berolina · 28/03/2008 09:21

you could ask at boots or chemist if they have sthg.

FrannyandZooey · 28/03/2008 09:21

ok
I hope ds's goes soon

If you start getting a yellow discharge you can get Optrex Infected Eyes drops in most chemists

oops! you can also used boiled cooled water with a bit of salt dissolved in it and use it to wipe the eye with a bit of cotton wool.

MrsBadger · 28/03/2008 12:06

I forget if you're still bfing - bm is a miracle cure

merlotmama · 28/03/2008 14:57

I had this earlier this week and got Golden Eye Ointment from Boots. I had forgotten all about it but when she said the name I remembered we used to be given it as children for styes.

My eye felt v sore the first day and into the evening but has gradually got better since. Today, 4 days from the start, it is almost completely better. Conjunctivitis is self-limiting (according to the nhs website)and you don't need to go to the doctors unless you are young or elderly or it doesn't gradually get better.

Having said that, it is your eyes and if you are at all worried you maybe should go to the docs.

FrannyandZooey · 28/03/2008 16:29

I can't feel any difference now - perhaps I just poked myself in the night

MrsB I am not still bf, but asked a friend who is, if I could have a squirt, and would you believe, the selfish woman said no

thanks all for advice

if I do turn out to have it, is it a problem for work? (pre school children) Am I infectious?

OP posts:
HereComeTheGirls · 28/03/2008 16:36

Yes it is very infectious, I'm afraid

FrannyandZooey · 28/03/2008 16:48

so I might have conjunctivitis
what can I do? not go to work?

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 28/03/2008 16:48

how's it spread? by children rubbing their eyes etc?

OP posts:
HereComeTheGirls · 28/03/2008 17:00

Yes, that's how its spread. But I think if your eye feels OK now and you don't have any discharge you probably don't have it. I suppose you'd have to decide about work if you wake up tomorrow and its sticky again.

HereComeTheGirls · 28/03/2008 17:00

Personally I would do the cooled salt water thing, can nip any infection in the bud straight away

PrimulaVeris · 28/03/2008 17:25

I often get conjunctivitis (well, about once or twice a year) and this sounds like it. It spreads easily so hand-washing and general good hygiene. If there's gunk on your pillow you may want to wash pillow case (though that may be OTT)

You can get Chloramphenicol (oh dear is that spelt right) over the counter at any pharmacy now.

If the drops don't ease it after a few days (instructions on packet) then go to GP to check in case any other infection.

Hope it clears up soon

We have been sending ds1 to kindergarten we took him out last week but let him go this.
