My DS age 3 is losing his hair

He has visible patches around his hairline which are very thin and you can see right through to his scalp. My Dr has no idea what it is cased by. He suggested an iron deficiency, but my DS has a very good varied diet with lots of meat, a lot better than many other 3 year olds. My Dr surgery will not do a blood test on him so I would have to take him to the local hospital, and I'd rather not put him through a blood test if I don't need to.

Has anyone else had any experience of this or any ideas?

could it perhaps be a fungal skin infection like ringworm or something?

You'd need to have skin scraping tests done.

He does have a scaly patch on the middle of his head, but the Dr said that it was a type of cradle cap and prescribed a special shampoo, and he said it was not related to the hair loss.
