Do I need to go back to my GP?

Two and half weeks ago, I came down with a headcold. Last weekend on Saturday the 24th and Sunday the 24th, the headcold morphed into something more. It wasn't a flu as such but the headcold symptoms increased despite taking medicines and I had body aches and pains too. My ears and throat were so sore. I was getting worse.

Last week I had to get a GPs appointment. I was apprehensive thinking it's a virus. My GP diagnosed chest infection. My GP diagnosed chest infection. I have my doubt about that. I think it's more of a sinus infection with a post nasal drip dripping down and causing a wheeze and cough. I think it's more of a sinus infection. My GP gave me 5 days worth of antibiotics.

My antibiotics are gone now. I am somewhat on the mend now however I am still not 100% better. I can function better now but I am still not quite right. The biggest issues right now are painful ears and pressure behind my ears. My GP looked in my ears and she said they were good. I reckon this is more of a sinus infection.

I am wondering if I need to go back to my GP for any more meds considering I am not better yet or do I just keep on going?

If you are on the mend, the GP is unlikely to give you more ABs. They seem very reluctant to do so where I live.

I've had a heavy head cold too. Started as a cold, then went into my back. My spine and hips hurt for two weeks but are now finally easing. It's not nice.

Well, I am much better than how I was last week. However I am still not better. I still have pains behind my ears along with pressure. I have pain behind my ears every time I swallow too. I have pain in my jaw that now looks like dental pain but I don't know if it's from the sinus. I don't have much of a headache or pain behind forhead or cheeks. All the pressure and pain is being my ears.

What you described sounds a lot like what I had. It starts like a headcold but morphs into something much bigger and it's never ending.

I had to take more pain medicine for pain in my jaw and ears.

I’d go to a pharmacy and get some steroid nasal spray. That’s the only thing that works for me (GP would prescribe but it’s cheaper to buy OTC).

Sounds like sinus infection. Go back to your GP. Had exact same thing was sick for 3 weeks because the first antibiotics didn't resolve the issue at all.
Try sitting upright then leaning forward towards your knees, I bet the pain will focus in your sinus areas (left and right forehead just above the top of your nose, and at the sides of your face between nose and cheekbones).

I would go back personally if you feel you are becoming unwell again? Do you have a temperature? You could monitor it and see if you feel like you are going downhill again?

I say this as I am normally fit and well but I had this with a chest infection after 5 day’s antibiotics. It basically started to get me better but I very quickly got sick again. Mine spread into my sinuses and developed into pneumonia because I kept leaving it thinking it would get better as I was on the mend. At the very least it’s worth a phone call if you feel ill still especially if they haven’t clocked the sinusitis? Do you have yucky coloured mucus? That’s usually the key sign for me I need more antibiotics when it’s with a fever. (And yes before anyone comments I left it for weeks and it didn’t get better by itself 😅)

Also agree regarding a steroid nasal spray, Otrivine and salt nasal washes (get the kit off Amazon) which is hugely helpful for relief. You can also use warm compress, warm wheat bag across forehead and eyes. Oh and ibruprof is better than paracetamol!! Can you tell I’ve been sick for weeks with it

Cotswoldmama · 04/03/2024 19:13

I work at a GP surgery, definitely go back, that would count as a same day urgent appointment and we'd want to see you face to face. Hope you feel better soon.

Also 4head sticks are great for easing the tension in your forehead

Go back to your GP. Thus could go on for months.

I tried to yawn a moment ago and it caused a lot of earache.

Does sound very sinus related. I get sinus infections ALOT especially in the ate winter early spring months. They are horrid and can be so so painful. I find lots and lots of fluids, keep on top of fluids, I massage my face, around my cheekbones and bridge of my nose, gargle with warm salt water, and also a hot water bottle I use over the back of my neck as I find I get the most painful at th back. Not cured but they sure do help. I do recommend some nasal spray also just to clear some of the congestion.
