I could well be constipated or dehydrated

A few weeks back I had this hideous stomach pain following a d&v bug - doc did appendicitis finger in very bad places test and announced I was constipated. It seemed unlikely (what with the d&v), but I took her senna and movicol, and pootled off. Not a lot changed poo-wise (really should have name changed for this ), I was the same as I have been for months - no more, no less. Tests for infection were negative.

Pain died off after a few days of rest. The ChocolateTeapot said her DH had the same sounding thing, so I put it down to a weirdy bug.

Now I have pain again, it has been on and off for the last week. I put it down to taking codeine based meds in the week, and took the senna and movicol again last night and erm, cleared out, this morning.

But the pain is getting worse as the day has gone on. It is low pain, like period pains, and goes down into my thighs like that too. It is starting to radiate to the back more too.

I am not due on. I don't get this with ovulation. I am not pregnant (I have felt pregnant on and off for the last 3 months, so have gone through about 5 tests in that time despite having a coil and very little sex!!!).

I have had a cold, it is possible I am a bit dehydrated so I am drinking lots now.

Any advice?? I am getting a bit worried, but after the appendicitis thing last time I am a tad reluctant to go to the doctor Hoping for someone to pop up and say "ooooooh, I get that when I do/don't do this" or summat easy

Oh, I've put on 1/2 a stone in the last month too, but I think that is just comfort eating rather than linked

PCOS? sounds like you're a bit frightened....really worth checking out with a different (decent) doctor imo...

if i did hugs i'd give you one....poor you.

Squirdle · 24/03/2008 18:28

Flame, it does sound a bit like irritable bowel to me. I started getting this around 6 or 7 months ago and it can vary from mild crampy type period-like pains to full blown mid-labour type pains. It could have stemmed from having a bug.

If it is IB (and it may not be, just a guess) then try a hot water bottle and something pepperminty helps. Apparently fennel tea helps too, but not tried that one yet.

And go and see your doctor. I'll be calling/texting in the morning to check you've made an appointment

Taweret · 24/03/2008 18:31

I thought of IBS too, Squirdle.
Flame, maybe you could try cutting down on wheat and dairy, and see if that helps.
But make an appointment with a different doctor in the meantime.
I hope you feel better soon.

bigwombat · 24/03/2008 18:43

Is the pain in the middle of your belly low down? Or is it to one side or the other? I've had IBS and with me it mainly affected the lower left side. I used to get relief by putting something cold onto my tummy above the pain if that makes sense! I would revisit GP, as it doesn't sound like constipation to me.

(PS Have you recently had the coil put in? Is it the Mirena type? That can cause weight gain. Could it be related to your pain?)

Taweret · 24/03/2008 18:44

Could it be a UTI?

Flamesparrow · 24/03/2008 18:55

Thank you - I have some zantac from my mum, I will try it and see how I get on.

I will make a doc appointment in the morning

It IS mainly on the left more yes! It doesn't feel like a uti tbh

I have had the coil for about 18 months now, it is the copper one. She didn't seem to think it was the coil last time, and the strings are still there

Flame- my colleague with IBS says her diet makes a huge difference to how she feels- including times at which she eats. I'm sure there's loads if info on that if you google it.
Maybe that would help, until you actually know what's going on.

It sounds horrible though- the thing down the thighs!!- and I hope it gets diagnosed soon, whatever it may be.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/03/2008 21:12

Are you taking nurofen/ibuprofen or any other medication regularly?

Have you been tested for endometriosis? Or a prolapse?

What are your periods like?

PotPourri · 24/03/2008 21:15

I don't think it sounds like constipation as that would be higher. Could be dehydration - but again, that would be higher if it was affecting your kidneys etc. If it is IBS, coffee often triggers pain in people with IBS. So try cutting that out - as well as wheat/gluten/dairy. Either cut all out and slowly reintroduce one at a time once settled down, or remove one at a time to see if any improvement.

Is it cystitis, could be caused by dehydration. Try drinking cranberry juice - loads, as that helps UTIs. Has the doctor taken a urine sample and had it sent to the lab?

Other thing is the coil, could there be problems with that? I have heard people saying they get v heavy periods cos bascially they are getting pregnant and it can't attach, so all gets flushed away when it reaches the womb. That could explain some of the pregnancy style stuff - including pains down your thighs (I am pregnant and get that from my softened pelvis ligaments)

Good luck , sounds like you are having a rough time of it

SlartyBartFastlaidanEgg · 24/03/2008 21:16

the thigh pain isnt coming frm your back at all is it?

me23 · 24/03/2008 21:20

I get the same pains as you describe, mine happen when I'm ovulating more the lower left side pain, then when I start my period I get more thigh pain.

Flamesparrow · 24/03/2008 21:41

I'm not taking anything very regularly - I took co-dydramol one night last week, and syndol another because it was the week from hell and I was aching head to foot - just needed sleep.

I took the zantac about half seven and have had 2 pints of squash and it has eased off a lot now (I am aware it is still there if I think about it iyswim but that is all).

My periods have actually been lighter than normal if anything (again, a reason for me doing pg tests!!), the last one took a while to get going though with spotting for a few days before which is odd for me.

My back was aching when it was really bad earlier but not now, and not down my legs from the back.

I was checked out for endo years ago (pre children), more as a covering all bases for other problems I had than it seeming likely though if that makes sense?

I'm gonna have to go to the doctor really aren't I? Far too many variables cropping up for MN diagnosis

OP posts:
VeniVidiVickiQV · 24/03/2008 22:20

oh co-dydramol gives me shocking constipation and aggravates piles.

You need to see the gp. Something's not right is it?

Flamesparrow · 29/03/2008 20:13

I thought I should update. I didn't go to the GP - the whole thing of when you wake up in the morning and it feels better and you feel silly

I haven't had any more of the same pain, but I have put on even more weight this week (another 2lb) and that is with exercise and an improved diet.

I now also have the feeling like when your ribs flare late in pregnancy.

I will be going to the doctor on Monday. I am getting sick of this and worrying. Pondering buying a more expensive test tomorrow too... the ones I had were cheapy ebay ones.

whomovedmychocolate · 29/03/2008 20:24

Flamesparrow - you say you have felt pregnant within the last few months. I assume you have had home tests come back negative? You might want to mention that to your GP. Sometimes uterine cysts can cause weight gain and pain and also the feeling of being pregnant.

However if you are constipated, you need to DRINK more water. Adding fibre and bulking agents without at least doubling the amount of fluids just leads to impacted stools - think arse bullets.

Flamesparrow · 29/03/2008 20:32

Yup, I'm gonna tell the GP my whole list of things. I am convinced I am not constipated now (but have increased my fluids too )

OP posts:
Flame · 31/03/2008 09:09

I have an appointment for 11am - hurting again today

Flame · 31/03/2008 11:32

Back from doctor - he is with me on the idea that coil, periods and negative tests mean I am not pregnant He has no idea what is wrong with me though, so is doing full bloods (including hormones), poo and wee tests. Joy. Who the hell designed poo pots to be clear??? They used to be blue!
