having an evening of asking a few questions!

been put onto amitriptyline 10mg x 2 tablets at night to help with my migraines. my friend is on alot higher dosage and says the doctor has put me on a very low dosage and it probably isnt actually doing anything at that level.

my headaches are getting worse at the moment but i lost my nan on mothers day so i think alot of it is tension.

dont know whether to stick it out at this level or ask for it to be increased.i dont know how long they take to work. ive been on them for about 5 weeks now

thanks

Hi,

I was on it for a while and it helped considerably but had to go up to 75mg for a while.

There was a lot going on and I think it helped with any anxiety which in my case exacerbated things.

If its no better after 5 weeks it is time to try an increase in dose. Dr's always try the smallest dose first as some people can respond to small doses and of course any side effects increase with bigger doses.

Have you tried anything else? I was on Beta blockers for a while which also helped for a while.

I take 2 x 10mg every night, not for migraine though, for Fibromyalgia. According to the GP I had in Scotland it is quite effective in a low dose as a pain relief med, even more so if taken with painkillers, and can help sleep - perhaps you are not getting the really deep sleep that the body needs. he said that Fibro sufferers like me sometimmes don't get good quality sleep becasue they get into this viscious pain cycle. it could well help you, it does me. I think you may need tos tick it out for a while though

thank you.i will see what happens and maybe visit the doctor for an increase just until things have settled a bit. there's so much going on as we've just had my nans funeral and upset and tension is high.
