Glandular fever and not know??

Hi all, my partner has been unwell for 2 weeks now. GP reckons it’s glandular fever but he has no symptoms and never has!! He has night sweats, raised temperature (usually during the night), increase thirst and urination, overall feeling of being tired.
White blood cells have come back raised along side liver tests have come back high. He was sent for a chest X-ray and we have to go back to the doctors tomorrow? Has anyone experienced this?

If the GP thinks it's GF, presumably they've taken bloods to test for it?

If he's got night sweats, raised temperature (usually during the night), increase thirst and urination, overall feeling of being tired which bit of that is no symptoms?

teatimefortiger · 15/02/2024 20:00

I had glandular fever and was very unwell, I definitely had symptoms!!

Littlepinkstarsbyradish · 15/02/2024 20:01

i had glandular fever and was unwell for so long, only diagnosed after 6 months! not usual symptoms, and without diagnosis i stayed at work full time for the whole time, leading to complications - so definitely listen to doc and make sure he rests!

I found out I had Epstein Barr virus/glandular fever at a routine blood test which highlighted my liver was inflamed.
I had no symptoms, I was asked if I was excessively tired, I said well yes, but I have small kids. 🤣

Thank you! This is reassuring. How was it treated?

Sorry I meant no swollen glands, no sore throat, no rash. I thought it was unusual that the temperature was only at night.
They took bloods as they thought it was diabetes, then they thought it was an infection. Now the bloods have come back raised liver readings, they think it’s glandular fever.

I was told I’d had glandular fever as a teen once I was basically over it. I came home from school and could not stay awake, would sleep from about 4pm-dinner and again after dinner for months. Then blood test showed raised blood cells or whatever and the conclusion was that I’d had glandular fever.
So doesn’t really sound like what your partner has but I’m sure it probably presents differently in different people.

EBearhug · 15/02/2024 20:31

I had what they thought was an ear infection and mouth ulcers. I was tired, but I was burning the candle at both ends. Other friends who gad it at the same time as me were far worse.

Didn't have any treatment, just try not to overdo it and not many late nights.

stickybear · 15/02/2024 20:33

I had it as a student without a sore throat or a fever. I basically had really sore swollen glands in my neck, and was really tired. I was in bed for about a fortnight but the tiredness lasted months.

Sian2388 · 15/02/2024 20:36

Thank you all. I am hoping it is glandular fever as the other scenarios are far more scary! Such a strange time for us all. He is never ill and now it’s half term and has the week off from work, he’s been feeling rubbish! I appreciate you all sharing your experiences! Will see what the blood tests tomorrow show! Thank you

I had glandular fever at 15. Mega high temperature and tonsils so swollen they were almost touching. Couldn't speak or swallow saliva. I was in hospital for a week.

FizzyStream · 15/02/2024 20:44

I managed to do my a levels with glandular fever. Not quite sure how! Thought it was just exam fatigue with added sore throat and I kept on fighting through. When exams were over I was very ill and blood tests confirmed I'd had glandular fever. Took bloody months / years to get over the chronic fatigue.

BingoMarieHeeler · 15/02/2024 20:45

Yes same @FizzyStream Glandular fever is linked to MS I believe, and makes you more susceptible to other autoimmune diseases. Yep, as an adult I have an Autoimmune disease 🙃🙃🙃

minipie · 15/02/2024 20:50

I had glandular fever as a student and my only symptom - bar a sore throat for about a week at the start - was tiredness. I just fell asleep mid afternoon a lot. I think it is something there is a yes/no blood test for so hopefully you will know soon.

Sian2388 · 15/02/2024 20:54

Thanks all. As no sore throat or swollen glands we were about stumped when gp said possible glandular fever. I think tomorrow they will do the blood test that screens this so for now we will sit and wait!

Sounds more like diabetes with those symptoms.

When I had GF, I had such a sore throat for about 6 weeks that just wouldn't clear. Had about 3 courses of antibiotics before GP finally did a blood test and diagnosed GF. I was horribly run down for about 5 months in total, not ideal with a young baby and 2 toddlers.

I have been testing his blood sugar levels at home after fasting for around 7 hours and they are elevated in the night when he has the temperature. (Although when the doctors asked him to fast for 12 hours they came back ok!) They seem to really raise around 3/4am strangely. I am not sure if there is reason for this mind you! I only know how to test as I am trained (one of my pupils has diabetes!. It’s all very very odd. If it is GF I will be shocked! I’ll keep you all posted!

I had GF as a student and I felt awful for weeks before they gave me a blood test for it. I had about 3 months off college in the end and slept through most of them.

lizzowhiz · 16/02/2024 09:58

I had glandular fever when younger; it can be diagnosed through a blood test. When my GP examined me, she could feel my spleen was swollen too which can be a symptom. I felt properly awful for a few weeks: sore throat, absolutely zero energy. Then low energy and generally out of sorts for months. It's a nasty illness.

Sian2388 · 17/02/2024 10:03

Update, saw GP first thing yesterday who sent him to the hospital for further tests. First lot of bloods were asked to be redone and he had a nose and throat swab. They still don’t know what’s causing it and doctor on the ward said it would be highly unlikely to be GF and took him off antibiotics as they weren’t working. Have sent us home and now wait to be called with the results. We are also waiting on an urgent abdominal scan. If nothing shows up, he will have full body scan. Still sweating at night, says he feels hot but no temperature present last night. Headaches everyday. 😔

Hope your DP is feeling better now? Was it glandular fever in the end?

Barleysugar86 · 16/05/2024 10:49

My glandular fever came on really slowly. I had a lump in my neck like an egg but felt absolutely fine. Work told me I had to stay home as I worked in an enclosed residential situation and they were strict about being off when ill. It went on like that for a week or so, then I had a few days feeling like I had flu. I/ was surprised when the tests came back for glandular fever as it wasn't what I expected. I then had weird on and off tiredness/ hot flash type feelings for a few months after although 90% of the time I'd feel completely normal. I'd believe this could be glandular fever personally, it sounds very similar to my symptoms in the last

Estella45 · 08/11/2024 13:17

@Sian2388 Any updates on your your partner? I had something similar a while back
