could it be the progesterone, I know it's meant to be a low dose but I'm moulting more than a very moulting thing on a moulting day!

i have a mirena, and have not had any hair loss, but i have heard that it can be a side effect.

how long has your mirena been in?

suzywong · 20/03/2008 14:25

three weeks

I'll be a COOT by the end of the five years, I'd better get a tremendous amount of spontaneous sex for this kind of pay off, I can tell you.

hi suzy, i have had mirena fitted recently as well (2 wks ago), and am suffering from massive hair loss as well (was wondering if i should collect it and make wig, just in case it keeps falling out until there's nothing left).
what crossed my mind was if it's possible that the coil is making me more hypothyroid (don't you also suffer from hashimoto's?), just like the minipills seemed to do.

whoops · 24/03/2008 08:34

I had massive hairloss when I had a mirena.
I had it removed after 2.y years as I felt I Was going loopy!

suzywong · 24/03/2008 08:34

WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
do you really think that could be a side-effect??????????

no, no, no, no, no, no I can't have that!!!!

will get my bloods done this week to check, I have been knackered and napping all weekend but it could be a bit of flu

bloody hell, you've really worried me now, are you just guessingor is this a known fact?

It would seem it is a recognised side effect - as are all of these:

Nausea
Abdominal pain
Headache
Rash
Depression
Weight gain
Peripheral oedema
Urticaria
Back pain
Nervousness
Mood changes
Pruritus
Hair loss
Menstrual disturbances
Reduced libido
Acne
Hirsutism
Amenorrhoea
Breast tenderness
Migraine
Menstrual bleeding increased
Ovarian cysts
Dysmenorrhoea
Vaginal discharge
Oedema
Bloating
Uterine perforation
Salpingitis
Local pain
Vulvovaginal infections
Mastalgia
Eczema
Irregular uterine bleeding
Prolonged bleeding
"Spotting" bleeding
Oligomenorrhoea
Pelvic pain
Pelvic inflammatory disease
Cervicitis

They are the official ones from the eBNF (british national formulary) but to be fair most women really do have no side effects at all. Honest!

lottiejenkins · 24/03/2008 08:50

I lost a lot of hair, but then was dyeing my hair same time so wasnt sure which was to blame

suzywong · 24/03/2008 08:52

Hellfire, dh just bought me a new vulvo 40, I don't want to get that infected!

When I saw my gp about the side effects I felt I was getting from the mirena (hairloss, modswings, tiredness weight gain etc) she told me it did sound like it was due to the progesterone in the mirena.
I had the mirena removed about 1.5yrs ago and soon after dh said I was a far nicer person!

Honneybunny · 24/03/2008 10:34

hi again,
am just guessing atm, but i will have my bloods done next week as well. the minipill definitely gave me worse thyroid symptoms, though there was nothing about it in the patient info.

Dalrymps · 24/03/2008 10:47

if you've just been pregnant you can loose your hair anyway, it doesn't fall out when you are pregnant, just stays in a permanent state of growth and then after you've given birth all the hair that you didn't shed whilst pregnant starts to fall out, could this be it? I had ds 5 months ago and have been loosing hair everywhere for about a month but have no mirena? Just an idea...
