Okay to take Picolax with Ulcerative Colitis

My DH has been given Picolax to take on Monday in preparation for a colonoscopy Tuesday morning. He just read through the information sheet today and discovered it said not to take if you have Ulcerative Colitis, which he does. He called the hospital medical helpline and was told someone would call back on Monday morning. He's panicking a bit now that it will get postponed and generally feeling anxious... Does anyone know if he should be able to go ahead with the Picolax? The endoscopy team know of his Colitis so we're puzzled as to why he's been given this. Separately, he's been prescribed Laxido Orange for constipation and yesterday we read this shouldn't be taken if you have Colitis. I feel like you have to double check everything is correct these days. I seem to have no confidence in doctors I'm afraid 😳😞

I have crohns, I’ve taken picolax and also moviprep pre colonoscopies in the past. I’m pretty sure both say to not take with crohns as well, but it’s necessary to clear the bowel for the scope, so took it. No ill effects (besides the hideous expected ones anyway….). I’d imagine there are large numbers of both crohns and UC sufferers having to take them in preparation for these types of tests.

If you go on the fb page “crohn's and colitis uk forum” a quick search comes up with loads of people with UC taking laxido, either short or longer term.

Good luck to him.

Thank you so much Conqueeftador for your reply - that's really helpful to know. I'm glad he can continue with the prep without worrying it will be cancelled. We'll both be glad when it's over and it's Tuesday evening. Thanks again!

I have UC and have always been given Moviprep before a scope. The leaflet says do not take if you have UC. I think it's standard because anyone with UC or Crohns really shouldn't be taking a laxative type medication but with doctor guidance I think it should be fine.

I have Ulcerative Colitis and have had at least 5 colonoscopies and have always taken Picolax as prep, as prescribed by my gastro team.

I've had Picolax with UC.

It's been very reassuring to hear your confirmations it's all okay to go ahead. Thank you everyone for your responses. The prep is horrible enough without the worry of whether the laxative is doing harm. Now we just have to get through today and tomorrow morning 😕 All my sympathy to anyone going through the same thing.

I was given Laxido by my GP and didn’t take it for the same reason as your DH but I had a word with the IBD team afterwards and they said it’s fine and that they prescribe it themselves.
