Hello, I'm 26 and been on movicle with other laxatives, suppositories, enemas and a peristeen, for up to 5 and a half years so far.

Hi 4 in a row. Yes, we have been through this, and come out the other end! As many say on here, patience is required. Also I would say that if movicol is not giving you the results you expected, phone the continence nurse or gp, and get advice on adjusting the dose sooner rather than later. Also even if things are not looking like they are moving forward very much, don't be too disheartened, as I believe as children grow up, these things sometimes just fall into place.

Hope things go well for you over the summer holidays.

Hi reenypip. I haven't got experience of adult constipation. What treatment works best for you? I hope there is agood treatment for you. Best of luck.

Hi twonker, I have problems with constipation because of my incomplete spinal cord injury, strong pain meds and long term use of laxatives.
An average day is 6 movicle, prucalopride and use a peristeen (a type of bowel irrigation system).
At times it becomes so bad I have to be hospitalised. And then they try every possible treatment and medication, even unlicensed methods that don't work.

Eeek. That sounds really painful, uncomfortable and awkward. Medics sound so definite to us sometimes.. Take these meds x dose x times per day, but in fact there is so much they don't know, and that is trial and error. Especially dosages. It took me a really long time to workout that it was up to me to suss the dose out for my daughters movicol. I thought the dose was x, and stuck to it even if the results were not what she needed.

I hope that there is some prospect for regeneration and repair for your injury, reenypip.

My DD is 6 and a half and we are pushing 5 years. She has 8 sachets daily and all before 10am. She also has a combination of 4 other drugs for her bowel. I should add that she has cerebral palsy, GERD and bowel disease with no reduced swallow and no rectal sensation. She will be on this for life, or until we had a gastric pacemaker fitted in her tummy.
