Low ferritin? What are your symptoms?

I’m interested to know what your ferritin level is and what your symptoms are?

At last check mine was 27, I have tingling in my legs and ectopic heartbeats have started the last few days. Headaches.

wondering if it’s linked.

Mine dropped to 3. I’d had blood tests but my surgery missed it and I went back and said “I feel like I’m dying.” The GP looked suitably rattled and I was admitted to hospital that afternoon for an iron infusion. I have them every 6 months or so as I can’t tolerate oral supplements.

Get thee to a haematologist to get it sorted. I’m a new woman when I’ve had my infusion.

Hi. When you say you can't tolerate, what does that mean?

aardonpardonwenttothegarden · 31/01/2024 12:33

Another question- despite these results my GP says I should exercise or go for walks. But inspite of my repeated attempts to go out I feel "dead" when I'm back home and can't even bother to make dinner/ etc. I also work full time and have a 3 year old. It makes my life miserable.

In case it helps anyone here, my suggestion is to ask your GP for a test for H Pylori.

In Dec my ferritin was 16 ug/L and iron 17 umol/L. I don't eat a lot of red meat but loads of green/cruciferous veg. I kept being fobbed off with "you must have heavy periods" which I don't and there's no actual measured evidence based of that anyway. I took iron supplements but they caused constipation and IBS flares.

I had a positive test for H Pylori in Feb and took a week of antibiotics to kill it off. Continuing with my low meat diet and also reduced wheat, but no vitamin/iron supplements at all, my repeat blood tests this month show ferritin at 48 ug/L and iron at 37 umol/L - which is an amazing turnaround.

The gastro consultant I'm seeing for my IBS/diverticulitis still calls a low meat diet a "lifestyle choice" though. She gave me a proper lecture and I thought it probably wasn't the moment to counter with my environmental impact lecture... ;-)

When mine was 6 (due to BID) I was exhausted beyond words, dizzy, headaches, restless legs, my hair was falling out and my resting heart rate was almost 130. I ended up in hospital for a massive IBD flare and was given two blood transfusions, but even then it took a long long time for my levels to come up.

onlyhereforthefood · 16/06/2024 20:52

Mine is 9 and I'm exhausted, like, can't move my limbs tired and my hair is coming out, but that is it this time. I've tried prescribed iron, and otc slow iron and they all make me sick.

I've just been prescribed ferric maltol which is £££ but better tolerate and being tested for coeliac after a negative FIT test. Otherwise GP is fairly baffled as I eat well now after years of eating disorders, and haven't had a period for 3.5 years (I'm on the POP and it stops my periods)

@Purplepeoniesdroppingpetals I know this is an old post but I am feeling just like this. Did you, or anyone else, also experience low bp with the low ferritin?

ItsBulkingSeason · 13/01/2025 15:58

11.2 - a bit tired, some headaches.

Having read this thread I am realising that my breathlessness is probably not my asthma kicking off and probably my low ferritin!

Annoyingsquirrels · 13/01/2025 17:39

My ferritin is 22 but all other bloods fine and no symptoms. I make sure to have a big juicy steak followed by high vit c fruit every week.

Cheslea2010 · 13/01/2025 17:43

I have the complete opposite. Ferritin was 780 a few years ago. Found out I have Haemochromatosis. Had to have blood taken away weekly to get the level down. Still struggling to keep it under 100.

aardonpardonwenttothegarden · 13/01/2025 21:21

@TessaF008 I have low BP - used to monitor closely during pregnancy and delivery. It was 80/50 during late pregnancy and early PP.

TessaF008 · 13/01/2025 22:33

@aardonpardonwenttothegarden can I ask what your bp is now and is that due to low ferritin?

Fizzygoo · 13/01/2025 22:35

I had mine done last week, serum ferritin is 11.7

im knackered

aardonpardonwenttothegarden · 13/01/2025 22:42

It's not very low anymore. I get it checked every 6-8 months when I go for a checkup for further treatment. I don't think it was linked to low ferritin. It's on the lower end around 90/60 - but nothing that NHS will do anything about.

I have also had low B12 and vitamin D so my weakness is a combination of all of the above.

I was called "lazy" since I was little. My parents had me tried all sorts of different medications (including homeopathy and Ayurveda) The actual problem was only found during my pregnancy the DNA trait!
