Gastritis from NSAIDS

Seen a number of posts on here about gastritis and pretty sure it's what I'm experiencing after taking NSAIDS for dry socket pain
I've been prescribed omeprazole by the doctors however I'm not sure it's really making a difference. I have taken these for around 3 weeks already (initially one a day for first 2 weeks but then they upped the dose to 2 a day)
How long do they generally take to work? I have odd days where I have little to no pain however most days it's like a stitch like pain in my left abdomen, pain under my rips and gurgling and burning all over my stomach. This often radiates to my left shoulder blade and back
I don't want to waste the doctors time as I've still got another few weeks before I'm finished the prescribed dose but also don't want to wait another few weeks if it's not working for me.
The pain most days bare-able but some days are very uncomfortable and I can't seem to pinpoint anything that triggers it

Thanks in advance!

@justasking111 this is an old thread I posted on.
My gastritis was originally triggered in 2023 by ibuprofen but if I think back I had mild symptoms before. I stopped taking omeprazole as it didn't help that much and has consequences long term.
The bland diet did the trick after many months but I still couldn't go back to wine or spiced food. Eventually I discovered that another drug was responsible (alendronic acid). I stopped that and now I can eat almost anything again. I'd never take ibuprofen though.

Alendronic acid osteoporosis?

Hi @Butningembers, How are you feeling? I could cry after stumbling across your post.... I have EXACTLY the same thing and I've been so worried. A gnawing, stitch like feeling with burping is how I described it to the doctor and they essentially shrugged and sent me away to keep a food diary.
Then on reading other posters responses, I was sitting here agreeing with them all... Orange Juice- tick, Spicy food- tick, Onions- tick, and it all started when I was taking ibuprofen.
Sent DH off to get some omeprazole, coupled with a bland food diet and already feeling a bit better after just a few days!
I will keep my next doctors appointment just to get properly checked, but it just goes to show, sometimes it does help to google your symptoms!!!

I'm glad it's working for you.

@justasking111 Yes for osteoporosis. I stuck it out for three years because I didn't want to go to the next level (infusions) as the risk of side effects increases. Once I realised it was responsible for the gastritis I switched. You'd have thought that the GP and gastro doctors might have suggested it was responsible...

I had gastritis after taking NSAIDS for a tooth problem. I was prescribed lansoprazole standard dose (30 mg I think) for 12 weeks then half dose for a month to gradually come off it.
Initially the pain was as you described, but the lansoprazole kicked in quickly. I still had days, though, where the symptoms broke through. After I finished the full course I was back to normal more or less, just the occasional bout of heartburn.

Because husbands mother had osteoporosis, he was prescribed them. Every Sunday he'd take the meds then stay upright for half an hour. He still got a bad stomach. So binned them. He didn't have any symptoms at all.

I'm still getting breakthrough. Lunch out with family on Sunday. No wine, beer, sodas. So it's water only 😭

@justasking111 I don't get any symptoms from osteoporosis itself but the risk of breaking bones is much higher and the older you get the more problems that can cause.

As PP have said, try supplementing with Gaviscon, I found that helped.
Another thing I use is DG liquorice chewable tablets from Holland and Barrett (the DG is de-something, it means a certain substance is removed as it raises blood pressure).
Good luck, I hope you find your combination!
