I've been reading all sorts and i've now terrified myself. Doctor said it could be a "low level" infection but that it needed checking out. She's 9 years old.

her other symptoms have been:
Tummy ache before going for a wee but with no signs of "stinging" or discomfort when doing so.
Headache on and off.
Earache???
Tiredness...again on and off?

Usually protein in urine in adults means a UTI so maybe that?

YouKnowNothingOfTheCrunch · 18/03/2008 17:37

Sounds like a mild infection, cystitis type thing (doesn't have to have stinging). But I'm no doctor.

Poor thing - don't read anything on the net ever!

brimfull · 18/03/2008 17:37

usually means an infection

luvaduck · 18/03/2008 17:38

yes it could well be a urine infection with those symptoms - so they will send it off to the lab to see what bugs are in it if any. if it is this then it will be easy to treat. try not to worry - googling is a bad thing!

Thankyou all for your reassurance.
Just got to wait for results...trouble is if they're not back by Thursday night i'm gonna have to wait until Tuesday....!

they should be - but you might have to ask the gp to phone the lab for the results. urine results usually take 48 hours. good luck!

cutekids · 20/03/2008 14:08

ok..Good news is that the results were all "normal" but as she seemed to still be in a lot of pain BEFORE urinating, thought i'd better check it out. Also,as everyone kept commenting on her paleness, mentioned this to Doc.who checked her eyes and then said he thought he should perhaps get some blood-tests done. I asked him if he thought she was unusually pale,to which he replied,"You can never really tell". I'm absolutely terrified now. Do doctors usually run blood-tests unless there are causes for concern?

did they not tell you what exactly they are looking for with the blood tests? if not, then ask them, they will tell you what they are checking for.could be anemia, if shes tired and pale.

my son suffers recurrent uti's and is now on a long term low dose daily antibiotic to keep them at bay. he has blood/protein in the urine and bellyache and his pee stinks of cabbage. sometimes even though the dipstick test at docs shows protein, when its sent off to hospital for "culturing" it comes back like yours saying "normal", but he is still given antibiotics because of his history. If she still has bellyache and develops a fever, then id take her back to the docs and ask for another urine test to be done

Good Luck

just thought, is pain before peeing cystitis?

tori32 · 21/03/2008 14:50

The tiredness/ headaches suggest she could be dehydrated and needs to drink more. If this is the case then she will be likely to have urinary tract infections because the kidneys are not being flushed out well so bacteria can build up. I don't know where earache would fit into this though
Protein in urine can mean infection, however, it is also fairly common for samples to be contaminated if they are not taken midstream. Usually if the sample is cultured for 48hrs you get bacteria growing and can identify the infection.

Where is the tummy ache? TBH with kidney infections the pain is more in the lower back, left and right loins, not usually the front.

Does she have joint pain? If so, just check her for any rashes..... no, I'm not talking meningitis!

My son is not feeling himself lately so I took him to a&e he has blood and urine in his wee but no sign of infection! Also has a constant high temperature and just can't seem to stay awake! Does anyone know what it could be? Need to wait till Monday to have bloods done.
