Chest infection... crackly noise

Hi all,
I went to the doctors yesterday and they said I had a chest infection and gave me penicillin. What I'm a little worried about is this crackling after I have a coughing spurt. It sounds like Rice Krispies if that makes sense.

Totally normal for an infection.

Atomickittyxx · 06/01/2024 09:59

I have this at the moment and I've not even called the drs won't get through/no appointments so waste of time trying. I'm just hoping to get rid of it through resting at home I've had them before and crackling is normal, unpleasant but normal. I've felt dreadful and it hurts to breathe in 😭 I'm hoping it's over soon. Get well soon!!

goodintentionsonly · 06/01/2024 10:02

I've been putting off going to the doctors @Atomickittyxx but I managed to get through and get an appointment for later that day.

This one is strange as I felt fine yesterday apart from coughing but by the time I went to bed I felt really unwell and feel terrible this morning. It seems really up and down

Hope you feel better too. Glad the crackling is normal. Dr Google had me worried!

I'd also agree that this type of crackle is normal for an infection. A GP once explained to me that it's different to the sort of crackle they might hear with a stethoscope on the lungs indicative of pneumonia.

That said, if you don't feel any better in a couple of days (or feel worse), then you should give them a call back.

Atomickittyxx · 06/01/2024 10:11

I'm glad you managed to get an appointment as it's always worth checking if you can, I just know it's impossible with my drs and like pp says if you still feel unwell in a few days go back. I started with the chills then the cracking started and I've got a cough that would do a 50 a day smoker proud😂.

Day 4 here of the same thing. Saw the doctor but he thought it was viral so no point giving antibiotics. The coughing is dreadful and I've got the crackly noises too. I managed one day back at work after new year and been off since then and I can see myself being off next week too unless there's a drastic improvement. It seems to be a particularly nasty infection doing the rounds.

Any advice on best remedies for the symptoms? My understanding is cough medicines don't really do anything, so I've just been alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen for the chills and drinking plenty of water. I really want something that can make me feel slightly less shit though.

DustyLee123 · 06/01/2024 11:00

I had this god-awful cough before Xmas. Went to the Gp and mentioned the crackle, was told it was viral. Went back 3 days later with exact same symptoms and told it was suddenly bacterial, so antibiotics.
The one thing I’d wish I’d done sooner was take Night Nurse as the lack of sleep due to coughing was the worst thing.

goodintentionsonly · 06/01/2024 11:01

@DustyLee123 good tip, I feel shattered today and even worse because of lack of sleep. Sounds gross but I kept wetting myself from the coughing so that didn't help either

And the cough medicine that really helped was Broncostop. Disgusting, but works IMO.

allenginesgo · 06/01/2024 11:02

It's the sound the small airways make whilst they are refilling with air because they are sticky with mucus due to your infection

That was me too, I ended up buying those knickers you see advertised on TV. It will pass.

goodintentionsonly · 06/01/2024 11:05

@DustyLee123 thank you. I wonder if that's safe with penicillin, will have to ask chemist

Robitussin 100% works

The cough suppressant is amazing, but do not take if you have mucus.

The mucus cough is great for loosening the phlegm and making it easier to cough up.

We've gone through 5 bottles between three of us, cause they're small. But they work.

Jingleballs2 · 06/01/2024 13:23

I've currently got a crackle! I don't think I have an infection though, the coughing is annoying and feel a little crappy but not bad enough to think it's an infection

goodintentionsonly · 06/01/2024 13:56

Thanks for the Bronchostop recommendation, it really soothes doesn't it. I'm not as crackly since I've been up and about. Night times definitely worse
