is it normal for periods to go mad after starting the pill?

i started pill about 5 weeks ago.week before end of first pack i had a heevy period,then in the break i had another,now after week of no bleeding in having another.each heavy and basically having week of bleeding then week off is this normal when starting the pill?should it calm down soon?

I had loads of bleeding when I started the pill, GPs weren't v helpful (i.e. took no notice) but then it did settle down after about 1-2 months (can't remember exactly as it was a long time ago now).

is breakthrough bleed same as proper period?sorry im fairly thick.
