How long before you are "up and about" following wisdom tooth surgery under general anaesthetic?

Had this done in hospital 3 days ago. I'm still laid up in bed, too drugged up on heavy duty painkillers to be able to do anything and face still v swollen. I thought I'd be up and about by now. The oral surgeon said the tooth was deep and it would be about a week before I was back to normal.

I've had two wisdom tooth extractions before (admittedly less complicated as just at the dentist) and was right as rain 48 hours later.

Anyone else found it took a while to get back to normal after this surgery or am I just a wuss?

Yes, took me a good while too - it's horrible and I fully sympathise with you. I think it was about 4 or 5 days before I felt anything like nearing normal! Hopefully you'll be just about feeling there by Saturday.

Sounds about right. I had all four out under a general and it took about a week before I felt up to scratch again. Make sure that from now on your face gets less swollen, because if it starts swelling again it could be a sign of infection. Likewise the pain should start easing now, though you may still need painkillers for a few more days. Don't get panicked by the bruising that is likely to start appearing now, it's perfectly normal (I looked like someone had rubbed dark eye-shadow in streaks down my neck, very elegant and just in time for the Christmas parties ).

Hope you feel better soon - and that you've got the perfect excuse to get out of doing any Christmas preparations!

I was going to say when I say the title, I went to the supermarket on the way home, as I felt fine, obviously the pain killers wore off 1/2 way round and I thought I was going to pass out . It really is very sore so you have my sympathies, I woudl have thought that by Christmas day you would be well enough to enjoy, bu not well enough to have to do everything, IYKWIM.

I had all four of mine out under general when I was 18 - can't remember how long it took to be up and about, but suspect the lure of the pub got me up before I should've been Am reformed now though.

But I do remember having to have all my passport pics taken for university ID that week - I had a distinctly yellow/blue hue to my jaw, despite using make-up!

Hope you're up and about soon hun. If the tooth was deep, it's not surprising you still feel bad. You should be OK for Christmas lunch, that's the main thing!

Thanks folks - have just been reading up that if you are over 35, a difficult extraction is extra difficult IYSWIM and it can take longer to recover (something to do with longer tooth roots and older bones . As long as I get to Sat and can tuck into my Christmas dinner and a glass of bubbly, I'll be happy!

I had mine done on a Friday and had to stay in overnight. Saturday and Sunday, bit dodgy, was off work Mon and Tues and got sent home early on Weds IIRC. So, Stuff, if you're a wuss, then I'm one too!

oooo huni thoughts are with you, had mine done this time last year, and ouch it hurts, i felt crap for bout a week bruising and swelling took bout 2 weeks to go! and all i could do was think about eating pickled onion crips... imagine how much that would hurt eh? hope your feeling better soon, only good point 4 me was i lost 1/2 a stone whey hey and that made it all seem worth while

Aww, thanks for asking - a "wobbly okish" probably sums it up . I still can't move around as it sets the pain off big time, plus, half my face is swollen, green and purple! My dh is doing his duty though - looking after the kids and bringing me cups of tea. That's why I had the surgery done this week - dh said work will be winding down to Xmas, so its easier for him to take time off.

I'm aiming to be able to go shopping on Thursday for turkey and veg etc - hope there'll be something left on the shelves!

sure there will be dont worry and lap up that tlc, stretch it out is my advice!

and....... STOP PANICING ABOUT FOOD SHOPPING!!!!
