Why is my tongue burning?

On Tuesday lunchtime my tongue started to feel like it's been burnt, it's quite painful.
On Wednesday morning I went to my GP but she said she has no idea why it hurts but if it gets worse to come back in a couple of days.

It's really sore, has anyone else had this?

um... did you eat or drink something hot?

I know that sounds like I'm being funny, but what I mean is perhaps you did burn it and you just weren't aware of it at the time.

what does it look like? I've had thrush in my mouth, that's very painful.

Is it possible you have eaten something with a chemical on it that has caused a reaction? In recent months, I have found that my tongue and lips have burned if I have ever forgotten to wash fruit before eating it and the skin of the fruit has still had a chemical residue on it.

Hope it gets better soon!

Yes, DH and I both had this, then friend of mine and her partner, who's a GP, got it. He also has no idea what it is - suspects it's a virus. Cleared up in about a week/10 days.

I thought maybe I had burnt it and not noticed but I don't drink hot drinks and I'd only had cereal for breakfast and a sandwich for lunch so nothing hot all day.
I thought it may be thrush but the doctor said it wasn't.
I'm very careful about washing my fruit but I guess it could have been something I'd touched and then put my fingers on my lips or mouth.
The doctor said the back of my mouth was a bit red so it could be some kind of virus. But Ooooooh noooooo please not 10 days of this, it's hard to eat anything rough, it'll be 10 days of soup

Sushi - it wasn't that bad for 10 days - it gradually eased. But I do sympathise - it sounds a lot like what we had, and it wasn't fun. I found gargling with soluble paracetamol offered some relief.

I had that a couple of weeks ago, I don't think I'd burnt it, I think it's when I'd sucked on a weightwatchers sweet , hmm maybe that's how they work then, they give you a sore tongue then you can't eat as much!

HereComeTheGirls · 13/03/2008 09:44

i have got this too..maybe there is something strange going around!

Habbibu · 13/03/2008 09:46

Think so - GP friend has since had patients with the same thing.
