Chest infection viral or not?

How do you tell the difference between a virus and bacterial infection in your chest? I've had a cough for two weeks and didn't think anything of it until this morning when I started getting pain and wheezing, even my therapist heard it and advised I contact my doctor asap.
So I did...saw my doctor and they said my temp, bp, heart rate are normal and she couldn't hear any wheezing in my chest. She gave anti biotics as a pre caution if still suffering by the weekend and I hate taking them but worried if I don't I will get worse. When I breath out it's a long wheeze, it really baffles me how she didn't hear it when she listened to it. Can a virus cause wheezing? She also said the pain is probably costochondritis from all the coughing...

You have no symptoms of sepsis
You'd be too ill to panic let alone post on here

emilylouisex1 · 05/12/2023 21:24

@Tilllly no I know I don't now, but it's the fear that it could turn into it as I don't necessarily feel 'better' so that's my worry

Yeah furthermore to earlier. My oximeter is definitely broken - says mg oxygen is 88 and my heart rate is 35, definitely don't feel that bad

@emilylouisex1 did you check to see if Piriton was safe to take? Not sure if you still needed it now or not.

I really hope the antibiotics start to make you feel better soon. When I was on them the dr said they start to work on the infection before you will feel the benefits in yourself. So you might not feel better yet but the antibiotics are busy working.
I hope that makes sense as I'm rubbish at explaining things!

I'm supposed to be travelling tomorrow

FFS you have pneumonia. Stay home! Get a fit note for work and just let your body have a chance to mend itself. You do realise it can take 4 to 6 weeks to fully recover? The A&E consultant told my DD " you are young enough to recover fully but you might have to take 6 weeks off work". Note the part he said young enough (she's 19).

@AutumnFroglets I've got to week 8 and still not fully recovered from my pneumonia. I hope your dd is doing ok now.
