lower back to the left and right hand side. Any ideas what it might be? It's intermittent. Sometimes have it for a few hours then it disappears and i don't get it again for days. like a kind of throbbing pain.

Do you feel tender like someone has been kicking you in the back!? Had this when pg and was a kidney infection - had a short dose of antibiotics which sorted it out. Felt a bit "coldy" too but no sore throat just achy all over.

Kidneys actually sit much higher up more middle of your back, is it possibly a sciatic nerve pinching? I often get this if I sit-lay on the couch instead o sitting upright. Feel the muscles in your buttocks by pushing down on them with your thumb, if it hurts and feels a bit like a burning sensation its a nerve.

yes it is a bit like that. It's a bit like period pain, you know that kind of throbbing pain. Not horrendous but not right either.

To me it sounds like classic 'back pain' i.e sacro-ileac )sp?) vertebrae or coccyx (sp again?) strain - my very tall dh has this regularly and I have had it once. Usual cause is a mild'ish lower back strain, like bending to lift a heavy child or something awkward or bulky. Does this sound likely?

Well I'm alawys picking DS2 up and he's a chunky 14 month old. I just thought back pain was constant? this tends to come and go in kind of waves (albeit waves that are close together), god I'm not making any sense. A bit like mild contractions.

Well, Im not a doctor so perhaps see yours, but IME back pain does come in waves, especially when you have set it off again. If your dc is 14 months it may be that your skeleton is not back in alignment. If you are not feeling ill in other ways then I would try an osteopath first. Kidney infections are usually accompanied by fever and increasing pain, so if you ahve had this off and on for a while without deteriorating markedly then in probably is musclo-skeletal.
