Anyone here actually fractured a rib from coughing?

Yes. It was horrid. Sympathies to you!

bunhead1979 · 16/11/2023 19:05

Yes. Such an embarrassing reason but soooo sore.

onwardandupwards · 16/11/2023 19:17

Yes twice, was incredibly painful. I dread getting a cough now 😩

ODFOx · 16/11/2023 20:07

Yes, during my first pregnancy.
I wouldn't recommend it.

BG2015 · 16/11/2023 21:16

Yes. Severe asthma and a CT scan found it.

Very, very painful

ShatParp · 16/11/2023 21:28

Yes! During a bad bout of covid. I had it twice 4 weeks apart and the second time around, I broke a rib and it was AGONY. Codeine was the only thing that vaguely helped as it suppressed the cough. I slept on a wedge pillow with loads of soft pillows to keep me almost upright and coughed kind of hunched over clutching a pillow. Apparently it's not as unusual as you'd think to break a rib coughing!!

ChampagneVan · 16/11/2023 21:29

Yes when I was 8 months pregnant. Was worse than childbirth!

ShatParp · 16/11/2023 21:31

@ChampagneVan oh you poor love!!!! Yes I said the same at the time, worse than childbirth!!!

Brummymumma · 16/11/2023 21:33

Yes, twice.

The worst pain EVER (and I had 2 kids without pain relief).

Grumplechops · 16/11/2023 21:52

Yup, twice. Excruciating and no sympathy as there’s no cast for people to see you’ve broken something!!!!

Pressing down around your ribs with your arms or with a pillow helps when you have to cough. And pressing the cartilagey bit of your nose under the tip helps to suppress a sneeze!

trampoline123 · 17/11/2023 07:33

I went for an X-ray and it's not actually fractured - I can't believe how painful it is and it's not. Almost wish it was to justify the pain rather than pulled muscles.

It's probably the cartilage...excruciating!!!!
