my brother used to get mouth ulcers. Said that they went away when he changed toothpaste - to one without SLS (which can irritate) and with xylitol.

SheherazadetheGoat · 11/03/2008 11:32

mouth wash helps, get the medicated type.

or salty water [boak]

i am in the same boat alot of teh time so i send you lots of sympathy.

SheherazadetheGoat · 11/03/2008 11:33

that is interesting about the toothpaste. will give that a go.

EffiePerine · 11/03/2008 11:34

I found taking a b vit supplement helped - Brewers Yeast I think.

I find Zendium is a good toothpaste for preventing mouth ulcers.

And generally make sure you eat well and get plenty of rest.

I've just had a tooth removed and was left with ulcers from where the dentist had damaged my gums and tongue. I brought some corsodyl from the pharmacy for the tooth but it is also used for ulcers, they cleared up within a few days and were pain free.

Sounds like you are a bit run down, plenty of water and fruit should help. I hope you are feeling better soon.

anbesol liquid much stronger than things like bonjela, you can get it OTC

Smittals · 11/03/2008 12:24

hi josben, sorry about that, they are miserable things aren't they? I use Oraldene medicated mouthwash, plus lots of plain water to drink, and avoid acids (fruit juice, coke etc). Plus, at the risk of sounding like a nutter, 'sharp food' so crisps / crunchy bread etc!! Just saves making any more little injuries that can turn ulcerated while you are still trying to shift the existing batch! Second the toothpaste thing too. Never found that Bonjela helped though tbh.

RUMPEL · 11/03/2008 12:30

Sounds like you are run down - get a good multi-vit and mineral supplement and take every day. Also if you have small dry cracks at the corners of your mouth it would indicate you need extra B vits. Very importnant to keep yourself hydrated too - plenty of water. If they don't improve soon I would go to Dr just to be sure.

where do you live josben?

suedonim · 11/03/2008 12:37

Adcortyl in Orabase, Adcortyl in Orabase!! You can buy it at the chemist. It's a thick paste which you put on the ulcers and as it contains a tiny amount of hydrocortisone, it takes the sting away and helps the ulcer heal faster.

I put some on an ulcer on my cheek which kept catching on my tooth, only last night and this morning, although I know it's still there, that 'ouch' factor has gone.

bundle · 11/03/2008 12:37

suedonim, dh uses that, i find it a weird sensation when you put it on!

suedonim · 11/03/2008 13:46

It is weird, kind of furry, iykwim. I put it on last thing at night and go to sleep so it stays in place. It has a tendency to spread so it can make your mouth a bit gummy first thing! But it's the only thing that works for me.
