strange red bottom rash (on children!)

My two dds (18 months and 4) both have an angry rash on their bum. I'm pretty sure it isn't nappy rash as it doesn't respond to any of the usual creams and dd1 only has a nappy at night. It is kind of a red, vaguely circular patch about the size of a table spoon. Any suggestions?

No experience, but know that ringworm (fungal infection, nothing to do with worms) comes up in circular patches. I don't think they're uniformly red, though - sounds puzzling.

You haven't just changed wipes or something, have you?

Is is shiny and slightly lumpy? and before you wipe sort of covered in white? If so it may be candida/thrush If it have a chat with your HV GP nystatin cream will normally sort it.
