Colonoscopy rescheduled as Moviprep didn't work. Any tips for next time?

My DH was due to have a colonoscopy this morning. He followed the advice given which was to eat a bland diet on Wed and Thurs and then a liquid diet on Fri. He started the first lot of Moviprep at 5pm yesterday as instructed. He followed the instructions to the letter but it didn't work as well as it should have and when he went for the procedure this morning, he was told he'd have to go back in December. He did throw up halfway through the second lot yesterday so maybe this is why it didn't work properly?

Does anybody here have any tips for next time? Should he eat a blander diet for longer? Any tips would be gratefully received. Thanks!

I think recommending a bland diet is just too vague. A few days of a very light diet ie clear vegetable soups for longer a few days then liquid for the last day.

Thanks. The recommendations on the info he was given allowed things like white bread and cheese. I'll suggest he eats much lighter next time.

I have been given very specific instructions for diet before a colonoscopy - it’s not a bland diet it’s a low residue diet which has minimal fibre - so breakfast would be cornflakes, lunch a white bread sandwich and snacks rich tea biscuits
ii’s not great but fine for a few days
they usually give you specific instructions with the moviprep about this
also the moviprep is grim - I found mixing it with very cold water and orange barley helped a bit

I have had 2 colonoscopies. First time I struggled using a straw. It was too much to drink alongside the extra water. And took too long. I was also sick on the second batch but had enough in me as was coming out pale yellow.

Second time, I made up all the mix into water bottles and put them in fridge hours before. Then I necked them in big gulps. This was much better for me and I drank it all quickly without being sick.

I hope he finds the right way for him. Eat less than normal and low fibre.

I found drinking lime cordial diluted with water the only way I could drink the prep.
I've got radiotherapy proctitis, the only good thing about it is that the prep works very well with 1 dose..... every cloud etc!

I'll definitely tell him all these tips, thanks. They'll come in handy so very grateful. He was given lists of foods to eat and those to avoid and I described them as 'bland' in my OP although that wasn't the word used in the prep info.

When I threw up with it when I was younger my mum called up and they advised her to go and collect another dose for me to drink so that's likely the reason I think.

Picolax is much easier to stomach, if you can get it.

BrendaMcPherson · 28/10/2023 19:22

The doctor said they'd try him with a different prep next time, so hopefully it'll be Picolax 🤞

I was so worried about not being well prepared I barely ate for a couple of days before the prep stuff and instead kept myself going on lucozade for a couple of days. I wouldn't say it was healthy but it definitely worked.

@BrendaMcPherson This happened to me a few months ago! So annoying when you have to go through it all again. It worked for me second time round though - they just said to follow the low residue diet for twice as long as usually recommended and to make sure I sipped the prep really slowly over an hour instead of down it in one like I did before. One sip prep, one sip water. And they gave me a different prep. Said some people just have better luck with different preps.
Good luck to him for round two!

Thanks @ohsoso
Hopefully it'll be second time lucky!
