What can I give a 23mth old for diahorrea?

My 23mth old dd still has diahorrea after nearly five days. I think it is because of a sickness bug she had last weekend. I thought she was getting a bit better which is why it seems like I have been a neglectful mummy and done nothing about it yet. She seemed quite bright and pretty much her usual self today but is still doing rather nasty poops.
To top it off I am 7 mths pregnant and have also been throwing up and having bad poos. I have packed her off to my mothers as I can't function much. We need to get this sorted and I need help, it now being the weekend I can't get to a doctor so I am turning to fellow mumsnetters.

If she's otherwise OK in herself, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Make sure she's taking in plenty of fluids to replace what she's losing with the diarrhoea, or give her Dioralyte which will rehydrate and replace lost sugars and salts. If she's still having bad poos by Monday, ring the GP for advice in case it's an infection. If it gets worse, or if you're concerned about her, ring NHS Direct and ask for advice (0345 46 47).

i agree with wwb, if she is ok with it, just make sure she stays hydrated. even if that means letting her guzzle coke. dioralyte is pretty vile stuff, and i know i would never be able to get my 22 month old to drink it.
a herbal thing that i always drink, and give to my babies, is a bre of fennel seeds and mint leaves. if no mint leaves, then use just fennel seeds. boil some water, add the stuff to it, let brew a few minutes, and then strain and drink up. for babies i would sweeten it a bit to get them to take it in. always works.
well, escept when dd refuse to drink it, because she is a stubborn little madame!

the best thing is just to keep her on a bland diet - no milk and no acidic fruits (though weirdly dd always seems OK with yoghurt, just not liquid milk). And lots of fluids, but you shouldn't need rehydration salts if she's keeping her food down OK.

She's not really got much of an appetite, she has picked at nothing today and only really eaten some cream crackers. She's bright and drinking water but just looks so pale and gaunt. It's probably bothering me more than her. Thnaks for the advice about fennel and mint, I'll try that.

dd(20 months today) has had diarhea on and off for last 4 or 5 day(by on snd off i mean, no poo one day then loads of diarhea the next), shes not eating, but strangly keeps asking for choc! and chips!, has little bits of weetabix and waffles, chicken, but nothing compared to her normal hearty self..she is drinking plenty of v.weak ribena toothkind(wouldnt be this would it? as only started this month or so ago?) and keeps telling me 'sore bum'. took her to doc couple of weeks ago for same thing?and he just gave me diaralite which she spits back out!
should i visit gp again or just keep up with fluids and NO CHOC OR CHIPS![

definitely dont let her drink milk as that will only prolong the problem - we always give ds crackers and rice cakes when he is feeling better - and lots of water - definitely nothing else til he is feeling better

Her bottom is soooo sore, it's making her scream with pain even when she has a wee, also major tantrums tonight trying to change a dirty nappy. Although I said thank god for sudacrem her bum is ten times worse today. I feel so sorry for her. Any suggestions for such severe nappy rash as a consequence of this bloody nasty diahorrea?

After you've put on the sudocrm smother all over her botty with vasilene or petroleum jelly, I tend to use it for everything, hope it helps your daughter.

i always found sudocrem to be particularly useless. vaseline or zinc oxide cream are in my popinnion much better. have heard lots of good about metanium as well.
also, try rinsing her in the bath, rather than using wipes as they tend to exacerbate the pain. and pat dry with a towel.
i have lots of experience with boys and nappy rash, but not girls. i hope she gets better soon.

We started both ours on Sudocrem - the freebie given away in the "babypack" but switched to Wilkos own brand Zinc&Castor Oil nappy cream.

Cheaper [loads] and works like a charm. Cheap enough to plaster on about an inch thick !
