Not Covid just cough cough cough

But what is it?

Came on slowly thought I had a cold, tested for Covid over a period of two weeks, always negative. No real symptoms, so no sore throat, headache, fever, chills, etc just a hacking cough.

it springs on me out of the blue, I have trouble catching my breath, it renders me exhausted, it goes on and on and on, five minutes plus sometimes. It’s happening a couple of times an hour. I have a slightly congested nose and it gets a bit snotty but not loads. I am probably very run down as have been caring for sick relative 24/7 with some A&E visits overnight several times a week.

when I go to bed I fall asleep without any problems but them after a short period of time I have a coughing fit on and off for 10-20 mins. Can’t take cough mixture due to an allergy. do drink lots of water and use a steam inhaler.

DH is adamant it’s flu, I think it’s just a cold, but over never known a cold which is mainly a cough. Anyone else with the same?

Post nasal drip causes a cough. Do you feel (tmi - if sensitive look away!) snot/mucus dripping down your throat, or if you swallow can you feel it there?

A tiny bit, not like a full on snotty cold, I do feel it’s a cold, but hard to tell as I’m just exhausted from lack of sleep too. Wondering how long I should wait to see if it’s goes away or try for a doctors appointment soon.

I had this a few months ago
Never had it before
Hacking cough for weeks
But no other symptoms . so I didn't really feel poorly as such as usually it's the sore throat and blocked nose that floors me
Barely slept for the first week I had it
Ended up turning into a chest infection after a month

Time to have medical attention. Could be lots of things but exhausted and trouble getting your breath could be asthma.

Thanks, I think I’ll book a doc appointment, our DD is getting married in two weeks, not sure I’ll be very welcome in church sounding like I do.

I have just had something very similar. Came on with an aching throat and then non-stop coughing for two days, and intermittent coughing for another couple of days and two terrible nights of coughing. Wheezy chest and slightly breathless. Blocked nose but little real congestion. At first I thought it was just allergies, as I also had crusty, itch eyes. But it did follow a pattern and now it has just about gone. My back is still aching from all the coughing.

Cantstopcoughing · 18/10/2023 19:03

I asked for a face to face appointment via the app the doctors use and got a phone call at 6.30pm this evening from a local centre who do these calls on behalf of the drs.

she said what I have is common at the moment and thinks I should leave it a week before seeing a dr as it’s likely it will just go on its own.

I feel fobbed off tbh, she asked me if what she said was ok, so I told her no, I’ve a horrendous cough that’s keeping me up all night and I struggle to breathe when it’s in full hacking mode.

I’m going to ring the surgery tomorrow, I don’t have the time or energy to allow it to develop into something nastier than it is.

I thought mine was on its way out until one day I got chills but was running a temp of nearly 39 , aching muscles and pounding heart etc . Ended up on antibiotics

Cantstopcoughing · 20/10/2023 02:13

So blooming burnt out from the coughing. Long story short eventually someone saw sense at surgery and rang me to go in (but only after a fair bit of computer says No). On antibiotics now and feeling absolutely shot to pieces and given up trying to sleep as the cough seems better when upright and awake.

I had the same thing recently and I realised that my cough was caused by acid reflux. Every time I lay down, or even sat down I coughed, sleep was hard. The acid makes your throat sore and affects your nose too, making it run and congested. I took gaviscon and it really helped. I also cut out acidic fruits and all snacking, and eat home cooked food. I also initially thought I had a virus or bad cold.

Cantstopcoughing · 21/10/2023 12:26

After two days on antibiotics I’m finally feeling better but still have a way to go.

i belong to a fb group for a hobby and mentioned my state of health and there’s a lot of others with it too, those that seem to be worst just had a Covid booster and or a flu,

so maybe leave it a while if you’ve got a cold before you get your vaccinations.
