Coeliac's - when can babies be tested?

Hi

One of my lovely NCT girls has coeliacs herself. Her little boy has suffered from bad reflux and a cows milk allergy, she is now working through a list of allergens while weaning him.

He is very lethargic, is throwing up every night quite badly and generally off colour. She has been told he cannot be tested until he is 1, he's currently 7 months and she is worried about him being so poorly until he can be tested.

Anyone got advice on this or been through it?

There's some info here about Coeliac. There's a blood test that can be done, which I'd assume can be done at any time. The definitive test is with a biopsy of the gut, which is why the baby may have to be a bit older. Is she working through the allergens with a doctor? Sometimes it makes it more difficult to diagnose a problem if the parent has already started eliminating some things out of the diet.

DS2 was tested prob at about 18 months as we have family history and he had cows milk allergy too. At 7 months surely there is limited / no gluten in his diet so it is unlikely. Also you have to have been eating gluten for the test to work, he won't have been exposed enough at this age. Sorry that isn't much help.

We have had a blood test for coeliac/wheat allergy for DS at 9.5 months, am awaiting result but been told it is not determinative at that age. Had to give gluten for a few days before, as had been avoiding it because of bad reaction to it. We saw a consultant paediatrician who arranged the test.
