do I take her back to see doc again?

she is never normally ill more than 48 hours

she has a temperature, not been sick

has eaten on average a pitta bread and a carrot each day since last Thursday

is drinking watered down juice

she is so lethargic and just slumped on the sofa

what shall I do? do "bad colds" last a week?

Well if it's any help oo I'm taking ds1 back to the GPs this afternoon for the fourth time in 2 weeks, same kind of symptoms. I'm fairly sure it's "just a cold" but the poor soul is just so ... poorly! I need their reassurance that he hasn't picked up anything worse.

FWIW ds's "bad cold" has lasted since before Christmas

Miaou · 05/03/2008 14:39

look

Bluebutterfly · 05/03/2008 14:42

Is her fever quite high - ds has had a high fever almost 40 degrees for 4 days and I took him to the doctors because I got worried.

They prescribed nurofen (for children)to get his temperature down and a rehydration drink because they were worried about him getting enough fluid. I would go to the gp if I were you...

RubySlippers · 05/03/2008 14:42

can you have a look at her throat?

there is a really horrid virus going round at the mo - painful sore throat, fever etc

Just if she isn't eating, her throat may hurt

Oliveoil · 05/03/2008 14:42

oh it is crap isn't it?

dd2 is usually running around and full of beans from the minute she wakes up till she goes to bed

atm she wakes up moaning and just slumps on the sofa

MIL has her today as I had yesterday off, dh is doing tomorrow (if need be) then me again on Friday

do you think the lack of eating will be causing the lack of energy? hold old is dsi miaou?

i would also take her back to the GPs

Oliveoil · 05/03/2008 14:44

I don't have a thermometer, I just feel her head/back

doc said throat was fine, chest fine, ears a bit pink but due to cold, no infection

she is like half a child atm [dramatic mother]

mine had a bad cold for the past 4 weeks and she had only just starting to eat properly.

fondant4000 · 05/03/2008 14:46

My dd has also been ill since about mid-Nov. I have gone from being the mum who never took her children to the doctors to going 3 times in a month!

Blood tests done when she was just getting more and more tired - stopped dancing, got very weepy etc.

Turns out she has anemia - partly due to the repeated infections. Maybe some iron/multivits wd help your dd recover?

I'm pretty sure it's because she moved from nursery tp primary school after christmas - a whole new set of bugs..... great

fondant4000 · 05/03/2008 14:50

It's awful to see them like that isn't it. Keep wondering where my lovely girl has gone, and can't wait for the summer.

Bluebutterfly · 05/03/2008 14:50

Can you give her some calpol or something to get her the temperature down? When the nurofen kicks in for ds he gets his apetite back long enough to eat some weetabix and have some diluted juice he starts to feel ill again. He has also been nibbling grapes when he feels up to it - is there anything food that appeals to your dd? If you give her really small quantities of food at a time, she may manage to eat something - even if it is just a couple of grapes!

Hope she gets better soon - it is awful when they feel so low!

Oliveoil · 05/03/2008 14:52

she is on Calpol every 4-6 hours, Benylin cough at night

doc said she was ok to have Calpol this long as long as it was not more than 4 times a day

she requested fig biscuits yesterday and had 2 of them

refuses all other foods

only wants me which is very draining after a week of 3 hours sleep a night

fondant4000 · 05/03/2008 14:57

I find calprofen perks them up more than calpol does, so I use calprofen in the day and calpol at night. Calprofen also reduces any swelling/inflammation so v. good if sore throat is preventing eating.

Miaou · 05/03/2008 14:59

ds1 is 2.5, olive. He is still reasonably active, but clingy and weepy, and spending about 50% of the time on my knee (compared to the usual ... er, 0%). Calpol as often as I can, not given him cough medicine but was up four times last night with him - crap, isn't it?

sundew · 05/03/2008 15:07

dd1 had this for 10 days - I am sure it was flu but the GP said it was 'a virus'. She was asleep or just sitting on the sofa everyday - and that was so unlike her. It probably took her 2 weeks to be fully back on her feet (and she is never ill).

If you are worried I would take her back to the GP. Hopefully she will be bouncing around again soon.

Oliveoil · 05/03/2008 15:15

it is crap, yes

I think I will see how she is on Friday and take her back, just don't want to waste the docs time if I am the 10th person she has seen that day with the same 'untreatable' symptoms

sigh

OP posts:
luvaduck · 05/03/2008 15:24

take her back
you can get bacterial infections on top of viruses, fever should have gone by now
GP shouldn't mind if they are half decent (i am one and would much rather parents come back if they are worried)

things can change - may have been a virus last time, or start of something else

does your gp do telephone consultations? if so call for advice

good luck

Miaou · 05/03/2008 15:44

mine always say "come back if you are at all worried" but they are not overstretched - I got an appointment at lunchtime for 4.20 today

Bluebutterfly · 05/03/2008 16:43

My doc said viral fevers only last 3-5 days. If her temp is still up then it is possible she now has an infection in which case she may need antibiotics. Wise to see doc on Fri, I think.

Best wishes!
