Private Prescription Cost - Antibiotics

Hi there

I just wondered if anyone has any idea how much a private prescription will cost?

I have Chronic Sinusitis and when it flares, it suddenly gets much worse. Just had 2.5 weeks of antibiotics but gone rapidly downhill again.

Can't get seen by my local out of hours service, so I've booked a private GP consultation tomorrow morning. Would be useful to have an idea of the cost of a private prescription if anyone knows?

Thanks

yep - £20 for me a couple of months ago. Probate prescription regular pharmacy

Chocolatesandroses · 19/08/2023 19:10

It was around £19-£20 about a month ago

Ah that's great, thank you both for your replies. Really helpful. I can definitely stretch to that kind of cost!

I'm not sure what antibiotic, but my private dentist prescribed Amoxicillin for an infection, and advised me to get the prescription filled at the Tesco pharmacy. It cost £3!

Wow! Just goes to show. I've got an appointment in the morning so hopefully I can get the antibiotics quite reasonably. Thanks 😊

I’ve had amoxicillin a couple of times privately. Usually around £11.

porridgecake · 19/08/2023 22:16

It depends on the actual cost of the antibiotic. Amoxycillin is cheap. Something like zithromax is very expensive. You might need something dufferent from the ones that haven't worked so far, so ask the doctor.

EffinMagicFairy · 19/08/2023 22:20

Yesterday I paid £9.65 in Boots same as NHS prescription although DD doesn’t have to pay NHS(couldn’t get convenient NHS GP appt) Private GP estimated they would be around £10.

BungleandGeorge · 19/08/2023 22:24

Totally depends which antibiotic you need! Also on the course length as most would only need 5/7 days. Has your GP referred you to ENT?

Thank you. I might need Co Amoxiclav so it'll probably be more expensive than amoxicillin, but I'll see what they say x

Thank you. A short course will be ok as I can always get a follow up from my GP when they reopen. Yes I've seen ENT but nothing further they can do for me. I'm under Immunology so hopefully they might be able to help with treatment for my allergies. Also seeing a Voice Clinic next month which is joint ENT and Speech and Language Therapy, so they may help. So fed up of relying on antibiotics and steroid treatments! Xx

I’d expect £10-20 for a week of co-amoxiclav.

KnittedCardi · 19/08/2023 22:55

I recently had triple therapy for HPylori privately. So Amoxicillin, Clarythromicin, and Omeprazole. Cost just over £20, less than an NHS would have been!

Wow! It's crazy when you think how much we pay in national insurance aswell!

The flat rate doesn't even come close to subsidising the expensive drugs.
I doubt if NI comes close to covering the cost of the nhs either, tbh.

I got a prescription for 5 days co-amoxiclav and it cost £9.65 from Boots. Thanks for everyone's help, just so grateful that the private service was there so I could get sorted before I got any worse x
