Any orthodontists about? Need advice about DS brace

Hi. Picture attached.
DS (17) has just returned from his orthodontist appointment with 2 weird tic-tac shape things sticking out of the back of his top brace. He can’t close his mouth, speak properly, or eat and his next appointment isn’t for another 17 weeks.
He’s already 18 months into his brace but these are really restrictive for him. What is their purpose? And are they really necessary?

Ask the orthodontist

They are called bite turbos. Placed to stop top & bottom teeth overlapping very much. Unlocking the 'deep bite' enables the gaps within the arches to close more easily (these gaps are visible on your photo)
I always warn that they will feel awful for a week and slow down eating. May need pain relief. Please don't worry it will all settle. I have placed hundreds. HTH

Ask the orthodontist

His orthodontist does not allow parents for over 16s. He didn’t ask questions as he is scared of them and shy. Hence I used the collective wisdom of mumsnet and thankfully got helpful replies

Thank you @SiennaSienna and @PC20 that’s really helpful. He will just have to learn to adapt to them and hopefully they’ll do the job and he will get rid of them all soon :)
