Liver Health mild deranged blood tests

SpringNotSprung · 12/08/2023 11:40

I had general bloods about 4/5 weeks ago and the ALP was 198, the GGT 54 and the ALT 44. I had not drunk for 2/3 weeks prior. Usually I drink 2 glasses a day - I reckon about 28 units a week so over the recommended limit but nowhere near the bottle a day one reads about. At most 1/2 bottle.

They were redone a few days ago and the ALT was 45, the GGT 40 and the ALP 197. I have continued to have no alcohol.

Further bloods have been ordered including lipids, auto immune antibodies, hepatitis, etc, and 2 week liver scan referral has been made.

I am hoping it is fatty liver. My BMI is 31.5 so I am just into the obese category.

I have auto-immune in the context of graves 30 years ago treated with sub-total thyroidectomy and levo successfully.

Because the ALP has not come down and the ALT is marginally raised but intractable despite no alcohol my mind is wandering down auto-immune bile duct issues.

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on this?

Have you had an infection of any sort?
Keeping my story brief I had deranged liver enzymes for a period of many months which got worse with every blood test. I was referred to the hospital and had a whole barrage of tests which found nothing untoward with my liver and in the end it was concluded that the prolonged course of antibiotics I had needed for an ingrown toenail may have been the cause
it took well over 12 months for my bloods to improve to a level they were happy with

Thank you for responding. No, nothing like that. No antibiotics for at least five years and I rarely take anything like paracetamol.

Hi @SpringNotSprung any update?

Icannotbudget · 11/11/2023 22:57

At 28 units of alcohol a week thats double the recommended maximum for a woman?

SpringNotSprung · 11/11/2023 23:51

Thank you for asking. Yes there is an update. A liver ultrasound indicated a moderately fatty liver with nothing suspicious. A fibroscan a very mildly fatty liver 4.6kpa and 239. The hepatologist regarded it as non alcoholic fatty liver disease and laughed, almost out loud, at any concern arising from liver function tests. The ALT and GGT have now completely normalised. No autoimmune biliary problems. I have had about 4 or 5 glasses of wine since August!

Very high cholesterol also identified.

Since first posting I have lost 22lb and have reduced wheat, carbs, sugar, trans and saturated fat. Cholesterol has now almost normalised and I feel fabulous.

The ALP is still 197ish which indicates bone issues but may relate to an osteoporosis medicine. I am having a bone isotope scan in a couple of weeks to rule out Pagets disease - I hope.
