H-pylori test and omeprazol?

Saw GP last week for extreme abdominal pain and she wants me to do the H pylori stool test.
She also wanted me to take Omeprazol for 7 days. Other measures were also discussed.

I realise after googling that you're not supposed to do the test for 2 weeks after taking Omeprazol. I'd already taken 2 tablets by then (Fri and Sat.

I will message my surgery tomorrow but does anyone know if you can have the test after only 2 pills or is it still a 2 week wait?

For long winded reasons including stool samples not being left in the surgery over the weekend and also constipation, I wasn't able to come up with the goods (so to speak) on Friday 🤦🏻‍♀️

She might have said not to take it till after the test but it didn't register if so, there was a lot being discussed.

I know this is Chat but it is Mumsnet after all, someone might know 😊

Little bump - I know this is a very specific thing I'm asking but you never know

I actually saw my GP on Friday for a meds check up. He said that they couldn't test for H Pylori for 2 weeks after I ceased taking omeprazole.
To not put too fine a point on it, If you've not yet opened your bowels since taking the 2 tabs, surely when you do the omeprazole will not be present in the stools???

Hmm that is a good point!

You should be two weeks free of PPI's, but if you are taking Omeprazole for excess acid/reflux there are other drugs they can put you on in the meantime that will not invalidate the H Pylori test.

Ranitidine worked well enough for me for a few weeks, but it stopped dealing with the symptoms rather quickly after the test was completed and I went back on to PPI's

@XDownwiththissortofthingX

Thank you. I will check with GP then, looks like I'm going to have to wait the 2 weeks after all 🤦🏻‍♀️

Def no ppi within 2 weeks of the test, in fact h pylori didn’t show in my stool, only on endoscopy!

BlackJumpsuit · 06/08/2023 21:14

@Boredofmyguts
Ok good to know!
How did you end up having an endoscopy?

@BlackJumpsuit - I’ve had reflux symptoms and other digestive issues. Had various tests!

I expect there are alternatives, but just to mention that Ranitidine isn’t currently available.

Thanks for that, didn't realise. I've taken it in the past but long time ago.
