Bruised big toe nail has finally fallen off - aftercare?!!

So back at Christmas had a weekend in London clomping about in the same boots for two days. Oddly no discomfort at all during but shortly after started to feel pain in both big toes followed by both nails turning black, as if bruised.

A chiropodist appointment around April and I learn it's actually where my nail has suffered trauma. There were signs they were lifting slightly and lady predicted they were likely at some point to fall off.

Aaaand today one finally did Confused

Doesn't hurt and I've probably a few millimetres of nail at the f bottom however this also looks black and had a bit of lifting so I'm guessing it's days are numbered.

I'll have to live with the fact it looks weird but is there any after care I need to do? Toe skin looks pretty healthy, no nasty smells or anything.

Any suggestions?

How long may it take to grow back?!!!

Now waiting for the other one to fall off.

If I touch it it makes me feel all funny Shock

I run and do long-distance walking and lose a toenail or two most years. I don't do anything special except try and hang on to the damaged nail for as long as possible - the appearance of a tiny nail stub in a naked nailbed is not the most pleasant!

Agreed! It just looks so weird. Luckily toes had a neutral fleshy colour polish on so it almost blends in.

Thanks for replying Grin

I had this happen once at Christmas when I forced my feet into stilettos that were a tiny bit small. The toenail on one of my big toes turned black, lifted and fell off sometime in January.

Luckily by the time I bared my feet in sandals it had grown enough not to look weird so probably about May.

Eek! Probably about 6 months to grow back - keep an eye on the new nail to make sure it is growing straight and forward rather than down into the nail bed!

Oh god I definitely don't want it to become ingrown Confused

I lost a smaller toenail this year and went down an internet rabbit-hole to discover you can get stick-on false toenails. Decided not to bother and painted my skin where the nail would be instead. It looks fine as it's small but the big nail might be worth using a false nail if you're bothered about how it looks. I suspect most people don't notice though, unless you point it out. My nail is growing back about 2/3mm a month.

One of mine fell off a month ago - got hit by a hockey ball. Happens all the time.

It's taking ages to grow back. I just protect it with a silicone toe cover if it's a bit raw but otherwise just let it grow and rub vitamin E oil on it sometimes to encourage growth.

Ahh thanks all I'm feeling better about it now.

Going to have a good look after my shower soon and rub a little body lotion on to make it look a bit less dry.

But first - off to Google false toe nails Shock

Lost a toenail in the Med a couple of weeks ago - I’m a runner so probably related - just painted the skin red to match the rest of my toenails

I like this solution. Grin

So googling false nails also revealed some pictures of toes looking far worse than mine. Stuff of nightmares.
