Yellow poo after sickness and diarrhoea

Just looking after some personal experiences with the following:

I visited a water park situated on a lake in the New Forest 8 days ago. 2 days after visiting I started being violently sick and tested my urine which had slightly raised protein and leukocytes, therefore, my doctor raised me a prescription of 500mg ciprofloxacin which I started straight away. I vomited my first tablet within 40 mins and was advised not to take another antibiotic until the next one was due. Shortly after I started having yellow water diarrhoea and continued vomiting. In total my sickness lasted 15 hours and diarrhoea 3 days. I needed to take 7 Imodium to make this stop.

Now the consistency of my stools is fine but the colour is still yellow.

My concerns are:

  1. have I picked up something from the lake to cause all of this.

  2. is it a reaction from the antibiotics. Can damaging the good bacteria cause this?

  3. or could this be something more sinister.

I would consider myself quite anxious regarding health. Any advice would be great.

If you've picked something up then diarrhoea is not unusual during and/or after vomiting. The body needs to get rid of the nasties.
If you're worried ring 111.

Thank you @Karatema I was more concerned about the colour.

Prolonged diarrhoea and vomiting cause a loss of bile salts from the gut. It is these that give faeces their normal brown colour.
Your stools will often look paler - yellow or beige rather than brown - for a day or two, until you have synthesised some more bile salts and your gall bladder has tipped them into your gut.
As long as you have not developed jaundice- yellow colour in the whites of your eyes and a yellow tinge to your skin - and as long as your stools look normal in a day or two, there is nothing to worry about.

And it’s caught from dirty water

Tilly0921 · 30/07/2023 17:47

@MzHz I did think it may be this but the diarrhoea has finished now and the consistency Is what I would consider normal.
I think I just need to send off a sample.
I definitely do not feel right, I'm exhausted. So a parasite would make sense and it's such a coincidence with timing and going into the lake.

My doctors told me it's 90% probably the antibiotics but I've taken this type before with no issues.

@Babdoc thank you, this does make sense. I'm on day 3 since the diarrhoea finished, so fingers crossed this is the reason.

My H told me about giardia and how it makes your poo yellow and foul smelling. Hence as soon as I saw your post I thought of it. Definitely get it checked anyway and hopefully then they can treat it properly and get rid of it.

If you've caught something I'd be more inclined to say the poo colour is from that. I had diarrhoea and it was how you mentioned for about 5 days.

But because of the lake get another GP appt as you might need AB's

Tilly0921 · 30/07/2023 19:11

@PinkButtercups was yours yellow too?
