Anaemic. Will I feel better after an iron infusion?

Hi 😊.
I am anaemic, and have hypothyroidism . Ferritin level 11.5.

I have been referred for an iron infusion.
I want to know how much better I will feel after the infusion from anyone with experience of similar please?

I want to manage my expectations but am so hoping I will feel a lot better quickly!

Thank you!

Yes you should feel better pretty quickly, I had two infusions a week apart and especially noticed a different after the second one.

Thanks. That's good to know.
Just hope I don't have to wait too long for the appointment to come through!

Hi, yes it will make you feel an awful lot better, but expect it to take about 7-10 days. You may also get " iron flu" where you feel fluey and pretty rubbish straight after the infusion and for around 24 hours later, so try and keep a clear schedule if you can. Not everyone gets it, but its very common. I wish someone had told me before my first infusion !

haven’t had iron infusion but started on high strength iron tablets after being diagnosed with anaemia and feel so much better – before that I was tired, dizzy and breathless

@Redannie118 that's really useful to know! Thanks

@Gadooza glad they worked for you. Unfortunately I can't tolerate iron tablets. The symptoms were horrendous

I have anaemia, currently ferritin is 9 after being 17 at the start of this month, and will be having a call with a gp later today to discuss blood test results. My lowest was 3 and I felt really dreadful with that. I felt a bit better after the first one but the second one I felt so much better. I have had 3 sets of iron infusions and one blood transfusion and have had no ill effects from them. I don't tolerate iron tablets at all, in any form, so this is the only way for me to get my iron stores up.
I have found out my hysterectomy op will be later this year, will know for sure when the pre op assessment happens, and hopefully that will mean I won't feel this way again. My anaemia is due to fibroids and polyps.
I hope the infusion really helps you💐

Yeah i’ve had to keep to lower dose as got sick of not being able to have a poo ☺️😆

@longtompot thanks. Hopefully your op will put an end to all that. Such a battle to just feel normal!

@Gadooza that sucks! For me it was the exact opposite with constant stomach cramps and feeling sick
