Heart murmur + low weight in 3 year old

Hi all

Took daughter to the GP for something unrelated. They heard a murmur and asked if this was ever picked up before. When she was born they heard it but checked again after a day and it was gone.

Since then she's been to the GP for different things and they have never picked up on anything until today.

They weighed her and she is 11kg. I myself am 5ft1/petite and have always had a low BMI. They said for us to book another appt so they can see her red book and check shes growing well and will take it from there

I'm really worried. I have read murmurs are common in young children, but paired with the low weight i'm even more concerned now

Has anyone had any experience of a murmur and it turned out to be nothing serious?

I have a heart murmur, I've had it all my life and its never caused me any issues. I saw a consultant when pregnant just so they could double check it, they did ECGs and all came back fine. Said its an innocent heart murmur and my heart just has a slightly different beat to most people. Hopefully its the same for your daughter!

Thanks Roserunner! Thats very reassuring. I'm glad it's an innocent heart murmur. We are going to get her weighed at the clinic again tomorrow as HV said sometimes the scales are off at the GP. She weighed 11.8kg in November, and now at 11kg but HV said she's not majorly conerned as she seems to just have a small frame, plus all the running around at school + small appetite but it's good that the GP is being cautious

My ds has what they call an innocent murmur and had an echo, also always been underweight.
I have a murmur and do have a heart valve defect (MVP) but it has caused no issue so far.
My teen daughter has 3 structural heart anormalities and no murmur.

Hopefully all is fine with your dd,

Thank you @DeerWatch that's definitely a relief to hear. I'm glad you and dd are doing well and it's good to hear a similar situation with the weight as everywhere i'm reading it says "as long as your child is gaining weight normally" which my dd is gaining but very slowly!

Heart murmurs in kids are always heard more if they are unwell. I would get it rechecked and if still there ask for a referral to cardiologist. So they can see if it’s an ‘innocent’ one. My son has one.

the wieght thing, if u feel they eat well then don’t worry too much about it x
