Not sure whether to put this here or under breast/bottle feeding - pain in (I think) breast, what is it?

I've had this weird pain in my breast for about 24 hours now. Well, I think it's in my breast, but not sure (they're not overly large)

I've been feeling around to see if it's a blocked duct (I'm breastfeeding) but I can't feel a lump - but would there necessarily be a lump? It's right at the top of the right one, almost in the centre, and tbh I'm wondering if it's actually in the breast at all or not. The pain is really deep inside the tissue, almost against the rib/sternum. Feeding regularly and not engorged at all. Anyone had anything like this?

Have to go out now, anyone had a blocked duct (argh, keep typing duck) or mastitis, does this sound right for that? Maybe I should have put this under B&B feeding

nice tits, miaou

sorry, can't help, but didn't want you to go completely unanswered.

Perhaps give your midwife a shout and ask her?

Miaou · 26/02/2008 21:39

lol no-one's ever said that to me before

I guess I ought to see the doc; I am kinda out of the loop for hv etc. ds is 7 months old now so midwife not around just now.

you absolutely should not be out of the loop for hv at only 7 months in!

Ring HV tomorrow, or make an appointment to see her/him

My HV (with all 3) was an obvious presence until their first birthday - and even then she made it quite clear that if I needed any advice/help then I only had to give her a ring.

verylittlecarrot · 26/02/2008 21:45

it could be a blocked duct

Have a try at some of the suggestions to clear it, they may help.

Miaou · 26/02/2008 21:49

I got signed off by the hv because ds2 is my fourth, and out of four hv's in our area three are on long-term sick (and I disliked her on sight so not keen to go back!!)

thanks little carrot, will have a read ...

I had something like this the other day. I've had blocked ducts in the past that really felt like a lump, but this didn't, just a dull ache and didn't seem engorged. Anyway, to cut to the chase, I got a very sudden high temperature and thought I'd have to go and get some abs for mastitis, luckily though I convinced the baby into an extra long feed, and did the massage/hot bath/flannels/comb thing you're meant to do for blocked ducts. Seemed to do the trick and it all cleared.

My advice would be to try this just to rule out blocked ducts or mastitis.

Miaou have you thought about thrush inside the duct? It's bloody agony. It's like sharp, stabbing pain deep inside the breast and it feels like it's in the middle as you say or in the shoulder almost.

I had it in both and it got really bad. It lasted for 6 weeks during which I was a total wreck and all I could do was focus on getting through it. The pain happens after feeds and sometimes during as well.

Mears helped me diagnose mine. It can be hard to treat because you have to convince lots of doctors it exists then get them to give you a big enough dose of fluconazole to zap it.

There are pages on the BF network about it and they even provide a print out page to take to the doc.

Hold on. I'll just dig it out.

Miaou · 26/02/2008 21:51

deffo not a blocked duct then, no hard area or engorgement ... but you have reminded me, will look on kellymom

Arse.
The BF Network have changed their site and made it hard to find.

Anyway, you could always have a look if you suspect thrush.

Good luck with it Miaou.

Miaou · 26/02/2008 22:00

oh x-posts spidey, didn't see your long one

that does sound possible - was just reading about thrush on kellymom and thought that wasn't it, but hadn't considered it being deep inside!

Will have a search on bf network and keep an eye on it - thank you!!

Thanks OK.
Yes it's very different from 'mere' thrush on the nipple.
