Resting heart rate 55 – is this too low?

I recently got an Apple Watch (mainly to track health / steps / sleep etc) and after a few days it's showing that my average resting heart rate is 55 (this doesn't include when sleeping). According to Google, it should be 60 to 100 and anything below 60 could be something called bradycardia. I'm female, 38, and reasonably healthy but not crazily so (gym/yoga three times a week, about 10-12k steps per day, eat fairly well etc.) I have a BMI of 18.5 so within the healthy range. Is this anything to worry about or is it just at the low end of normal??

Nope not at all shows you are very fit and healthy

FrenesiGates · 06/07/2023 12:21

@Glitterstars well that's a relief! For some reason I've been getting super worried about my health for seemingly no good reason (I think it must because I'm nearing 40 and a few friends have become ill in the past few years) – hence the Apple Watch and newly purchased critical illness cover! Thanks for replying

Mine is the same and like you it made me think there was something wrong. But Dr said it's good and healthy. I have a few pounds to lose aswell so I'm grateful my heart is still ok!

Mine is between 52 and 57 according to my fitbit and I'm pretty overweight, albeit fit enough.

I've not really worried about it - I've not keeled over yet and don't seem to have any of the symptoms of bradycardia. I've always had a heartrate on the low side (I remember when we used to practise taking our heartrates for things like first aid mine was always at least 10 points lower than anyone elses).

You might need to wear it tighter on your wrist, my gp said loads of people come in thinking they’re at deaths door because they’re wearing a new Fitbit too loosely!

EvelynKatie · 06/07/2023 12:34

Mine and my close friends, we all love exercise, have always been below 60. I switched from fitbit to apple watch a few years ago and it's the same.

FrenesiGates · 06/07/2023 12:35

@Sparkl I'll try tightening it and see if that changes things! I've actually just remembered that last time I went to get a check up for a pill prescription the nurse said my heart rate was low then too – so it might just be normal for me like some of the other PP!

Just means you’re fit. Mine is 40-45

FrenesiGates · 06/07/2023 12:36

@Blondey2023 from these replies it sounds like something drs get quite frequently!!

Yep, just low end of normal. Mine was around that when I was very fit and healthy. It’s 80 now I am fatty fat fat

Random789 · 06/07/2023 12:52

Mine was that low when I was exercising more a few years ago. It's higher now because I am exercising less. I'm guessing that 55 would only be assessed as indicating a problem if there was a particular context, with other relevant symptoms.
You don't say whether you do any moderately intense cardiovascular exercise? I guess that (from my perspective of total lack of medical expertise) I would find it surprising to have that low a heartrate without getting properly out of breath a few times a week. But perhaps that is age dependent - - I've only paid attention to stats for people in their 50s/60s.

junebirthdaygirl · 06/07/2023 12:52

My dds was low and doctor said she could have had the capacity to become an elite athlete!! She asked me why l hadn't pushed her more when she was younger as she might have starred!! It's fine.

Bloops · 06/07/2023 13:21

Mines in the 50s too. I remember when sleeping, mine dipped into the 30s! It's always been like it.
If you've got no other symptoms then that could just be normal for you, too.

blahblahblah1654 · 06/07/2023 13:22

Seems like low end of normal to me. Good heart rate!

FrenesiGates · 06/07/2023 16:21

@junebirthdaygirl haha! I was really not into sport at all when I was younger and then once I was older and it wasn't all about competitive school / team sports I actually got quite into it – but 100% not an athlete at all!!
