40 year old male. BMI of 22 5ft 7. Exercise regularly and eat fairly healthy easily get to six portions of fruit and veg a day beans and pulse once a week etc. Mainly white meat. But weakness for cheese, cookies and chocolate.
I had my over 40 health check on the NHS. It came back with quote Dr worring high liver function test results.
Also high cholesterol but bad cholesterol was fine and it was the good cholesterol which was high. Overall cholesterol was around 8.
Dr said two not connected and was not overly worried about the cholesterol as it was good cholesterol.
Bloods were rerun two weeks later. Liver function still very high as was cholesterol like before no other bloods were of concern.
I do get random adomon discomfort mainly on left lower side sometimes right which is mild bloating and occasionally poo has a yellow ish colour.
Any idea what it could be the Dr has referred me for a priority scan so she must be worried about something but won't say why.

Do you know which liver function tests were high?

And did it increase between tests or remain constant?

Benign liver cysts are v common (and often asymptomatic, only picked up if there are investigations for some other reason). Often no treatment is needed, just monitoring until it shows signs of going awa all by itself

I think it was Alkaline phosphatase but I am not 100% sure. Levels were about the same over the two tests. Thing is overall I feel prety well.

Could it be fatty liver? I have a touch of it and my liver function tests are always highish . Showed up on an ultra sound. For context I run a ton and bodybuild/eat healthy but also have a weakness for chocolate 😂 they keep an eye on it but I don’t think they think it will kill me!

MrsCarson · 24/06/2023 21:28

I had high liver enzymes, and high cholesterol along with anaemia and it was Coeliacs, now I have normal liver and normal cholesterol.
I had no other symptoms

That is more re assuring as it sounds like we have a similar life style, especialy the chocolate part :). I alo wonder if it could be a covid hang over as I read some people get liver damage from it

Hi,
Sorry to ask on another op's thread but can I ask what your levels were? I am waiting for my second set of bloods with a possible coeliac diagnosis. Thanks.

If it is fatty liver, fructose is a key cause. I would try limiting sugar (table sugar is 50% fructose) and UPF (often have fructose added).

ODFOx · 25/06/2023 09:27

High ALP could be from a variety of causes: it flags more than the liver, and in the absence of elevation in any other liver markers could be unrelated to the liver completely. Do not change your diet or lifestyle on the day so of any of us . It is hard but wait for your results. You should expect a full abdominal scan.
Were these bloods done after overnight fast or did you have a good meal an hour before the samples were taken?

Alanine aminotransferase level 297 u/l when fasting was 437
Total Bilrudim 33 umol/l when fasting was 15 before

I honestly don't remember, but my bloods were being checked every couple of months and I could never get them to drop. But now all normal levels.

did you do anything in particular to get them to drop eg change diet loose weight?

Were other levels high such as ESR?

A scan is the next step - easy to say don't worry but it's usually not sinister.

No weight loss, I just had to change to Gluten free diet due to Coeliacs and I have actually gained a load so I'm now having to work on loosing it all.
