Serum iron level of 4

Hi all, just had a call from the GP that I have a serum iron level of 4, he has left me a prescription for iron tablets, feel dreadful, hair is falling out and I'm breathless, how long until I feel better? Xx

Hi, I had the same level 18 months ago. I took 3 iron tablets daily for 4 months and when they were retested they were 55.
I occasionally have the odd iron tablet here and there. I had a blood test for something else but my main symptom was addiction to menthol tablets!

Yes, I think mine had been getting low for years gradually so I didn't really notice my symptoms but I got out of breath climbing up stairs/hills and thought I was unfit. I didn't really notice hair loss but got light headed going from crouching to standing and wobbly legs in the morning.Also getting through packs of hall menthols 😄
I haven't been tested for 18months now so they might have gone down a bit.
The iron the doctor prescribes are the strongest but some people get constipation on them. If you do you could always try spartone but less effective as weaker dose, give it time to work though x
