Do stones cause kidney pain before they pass?

I passed a kidney stone a month ago and it was incredibly painful. I went to A&E and had a CT scan and it picked up two stones, one in each kidney.

I passed the right kidney stone and had a follow-up ultrasound and there's still a 4mm stone in my left kidney. No hydronephrosis and the stone is high up in my kidney so isn't near the ureter.

For the past few weeks I've been having awful intermittent cramping pains in my left flank. It's a nasty pinching pain that makes me feel nauseated and can radiate down to my lower back, but is mostly right where the left kidney is. If the first kidney stone attack was 10/10 pain, I'd say this is a 6/10.

Everything I've read says the pain is from the stone passing through the ureter, but I'm having lots of pain with it just chilling in my kidney.

Has anyone else had kidney pain from a stone in situ? Is my kidney just going to hurt until the stone is gone?

Kidney stones can be incredibly painful as l know only too well. The relief when they have passed is indescribable. Unfortunately you are likely to get pain until it has passed, which l hope, for your sake is soon. I hope you are soon feeling much better.
