My son came home yesterday with a note saying that one of his chums has hand foot and mouth disease. He shows no symptoms as yet but I am 31 weeks pregnant so am a bit worried. Does anyone know anything about it?

my dd1 had this when she was about 2. its blisters that appear on the palms fo hands, soles of feet and in the mouth - my dd has dozens on her tongue - she could only eat ice cubes for a week it was the worst week of my life, i felt so helpless when she stuck her tongue out, covered in angry blistes and said "can you kiss it better mummy?"

sometimes blisters can also appear around the hips and groin. there isnt much that can be done except lots of calpol for the pain.

i think doctors worry when pg women come into contact with this virus - id mention it to your mw - even if ds doesnt show any symptoms at the moment

best wishes

My DC had this when they were about 6 and 3. The spots on the hands and feet were ok, it was the mouth ulcers that were really painful for them. From what I remember there is an incubation period, DS1 came out in it first then about 3/4 days later DS2 came out in it.

They were not ill in themselves, just had to give them lots of icecream and soft things as they had lots of ulcers in the mouth.

I am sure it is an infant disease rather than an adult, but we all have our own towels and face cloths so I am assuming that DH and I did not get it because of this. I could be wrong though.

It might just be worthwile giving your gp/midwife a ring to check.

DS1 and I had hand, foot and mouth when I was about 4 weeks pregnant by DS2. By the time I found out I was pregnant it had cleared up, so it was a bit late anyway. Everything was fine. The risk of it causing problems is very low. You might want to check out nhsdirect. There is info on hand, foot and mouth and pregnancy.
