DD got a temp of 39.6 which was controlled by Calpol but has reached the max dose (4 times in 24 hours) and can't have any more until later this morning.....but temp spiked up again as the 3.30am dose wore off.

Spoke to the GP who said to alternate with neurofen but I couldn't understand what he was saying, and every time I asked a question he told me the same thing. In the end I gave up.

So, she's just had 2.5mls neurofen....when do I give next lot? And when can I give calpol (24 hours are up at 11am)?

Am I just being really thick?

Shes 8 months btw

TIA

calpol and nurofen do not need to be alternated. they can be given both simultaneously if needed. they are two different types of pain relievers so taking them together does not cause problems.

Twiglett · 22/02/2008 09:06

give calpol write down time

2 later give nurofen

3 hours later give calpol (although you can give it up to an hour earlier)

3 hours later give nurofen

2 - 3 hours later give calpol

3 hours later nurofen

just use the calpol to give it a boost in between the 6 hourly nurofen

it's just keepig the analgesic steady

what k says is true but you'd really want to use them to keep them settled

Twiglett · 22/02/2008 09:07

mmj .. you shouldn't give nurofen at 4 hourly intervals though .. it's a 6 hourly

kando · 22/02/2008 09:08

2 hours after giving neurofen give your dd the calpol. Then 2 hours after that, give her more neurofen. Hope she's feeling better soon x

missorinoco · 22/02/2008 09:09

at 8 months can give next dose neurofen in 6 hrs. (is 3/4 x per day so i would give every 6 hrs).
can give next dose calpol at 11 am.

then next dose neurofen when due (3 pm).
then calpol. (about 5 pm).

and so on.

(think can give calpol 4 hrly but max 4x per day, so eases my fuddled brain to give it 6hrl and therefore not get confused in the wee hrs).

not thick, just tired.

hope it gets better soon.

kando · 22/02/2008 09:10

sorry, cross posts with everyone else! I thought (and was told by pharmacist, but my dds may have been older than 8 mths) alternate the two medicines every 2 hours.

missorinoco · 22/02/2008 09:10

oh, i like twiglett's way of writing it better than mine. is much easier to understand.

LittleMissNorty · 22/02/2008 09:11

Great - thanks ladies....Calpol at 11am then

I have been admitted to hospital twice with DS1 both times he was under 2.5 and I wasn't able to bring his temperature down. In hospital they were alternating calpol and neurofen hourly until it came down. I learnt fast how to avoid being admitted which is a horrible and unenlightening experience, which thankfully he seems to have grown out of.

amidaiwish · 22/02/2008 09:24

if the temperature hits 39, you should give a dose of calpol and nurofen - together.

it is the combination that gets it down. if this is the first dose of either in 24 hours you don't need to wait to give the other, give them both at the same time.

if the temperature doesn't drop in 20minutes, get to A&E. Febrile convulsions can occur at 40degrees.

don't mean to alarm but had this with DD2 last year...

Twiglett · 22/02/2008 13:04

39 isn't that worrying if you ask me .. and one of my children still gets febrile episodes

the only thing that would get me to A&E is if a high (over 39.5) temp does not come down within 40 mins of nurofen

LittleMissNorty · 22/02/2008 18:14

Well I've been alternating all day and she seems calmer. Thanks for all your advice this morning....I was SOooooo knackered I couldn't think straight - and this is the first fever I've had to deal with (can you tell?)

Do I just carry on like this through the night and tomorrow? She's still quite warm (37.5-38ish) and presumably will heat up more if I don't medicate.

Eating and drinking ok, but no dirty nappies since yesterday- have I constipated her? Any tips for that?
