Hip pain. What is it?

Last week when I was running I developed a burning sort of pain in my left hip. Not agony but bothersome. When I stopped it was painful to the touch and my right hip started feeling tender too. I ran again tonight and my left hip was still sore and still is now.

I'm 43. Surely I'm too young for arthritis (yeah thanks mum for planting that thought ) but what is it? I've been running regularly for nearly a year and I've had several problems but mainly with my lower leg. This is new.

Anyone got any ideas. Please.

Bursitis?

OrmIrian · 21/02/2008 21:04

Eh? OK...I'll google. Thanks

Sorry OrmIrian - no idea. I get a pain in my hip if I don't run. It's like a nagging voice lol. Mine is arthritis, I'm pretty sure, as mum has had the same hip replaced.

My stock answer in these situations is shoes. Do they need replacing?

OrmIrian · 21/02/2008 21:08

I have just got new shoes saggar! Which I find suspicious. Apparently I am a pronator so am wondering if these shoes are not right for me - just picked up from Adidas by price and fit. They did help me run faster and longer but then this pain developed.

Sorry - trochanteric bursitis?

I have had this.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 21/02/2008 21:10

Hmm - suspicious. Do you still have your old shoes? Maybe try a run with those and see how it goes.

I have arthritis in my hip, and it didn't start lie that. It's also not painful to the touch.

OrmIrian · 21/02/2008 21:12

Ow! That sounds quite like it milliways.

How did you treat it milliways. Did it go away. I've just reached 10k and I'm damned if I'm going to give up

Go to GP. They prod it, you say "ow" & if they agree a Bursitis you get a steroid jab on the spot!

I have also had Meralgia Parasthetica - similar but a trapped nerve in hip gives referred pain in thigh.

OrmIrian · 21/02/2008 21:40

Thanks milliways. I will have to do that. I really can't face the thought of giving up.

It did go, but I think you have to let it heal up properly before running or it will flare up again. Speak to GP - it may be something else?

OrmIrian · 25/02/2008 13:23

I went to see GP who did mention bursitis as a possiblity, but he reckoned that I had probably just 'annoyed the muscle'. So recommended high strength ibuprofen to start with, but gave me a prescription for some stronger anti-inflamatories to use if I needed them. Ibuprofen was quite good. Good enough to go for a 6 mile run on Sunday (DH ranting at me like mad all the time I was getting ready). Did OK.... the pain was nagging but not bad. I kept the speed down and ran a flat route. No ill-effects today. Fingers crossed...

Glad to hear it!

Keep on running.....

OrmIrian · 27/02/2008 12:51

Thanks milliways. But I spoke to soon . Tried to do my 4.5 mile run last night and ended up walking a lot of it. I'm going to carry on with the ibuprofen and cut out my Thursday run and see how it goes then.

Bugger
