Hip pain. What is it?

Last week when I was running I developed a burning sort of pain in my left hip. Not agony but bothersome. When I stopped it was painful to the touch and my right hip started feeling tender too. I ran again tonight and my left hip was still sore and still is now.

I'm 43. Surely I'm too young for arthritis (yeah thanks mum for planting that thought ) but what is it? I've been running regularly for nearly a year and I've had several problems but mainly with my lower leg. This is new.

Anyone got any ideas. Please.

Sorry OrmIrian - no idea. I get a pain in my hip if I don't run. It's like a nagging voice lol. Mine is arthritis, I'm pretty sure, as mum has had the same hip replaced.

My stock answer in these situations is shoes. Do they need replacing?

I have just got new shoes saggar! Which I find suspicious. Apparently I am a pronator so am wondering if these shoes are not right for me - just picked up from Adidas by price and fit. They did help me run faster and longer but then this pain developed.

Hmm - suspicious. Do you still have your old shoes? Maybe try a run with those and see how it goes.

I have arthritis in my hip, and it didn't start lie that. It's also not painful to the touch.

Go to GP. They prod it, you say "ow" & if they agree a Bursitis you get a steroid jab on the spot!

I have also had Meralgia Parasthetica - similar but a trapped nerve in hip gives referred pain in thigh.

It did go, but I think you have to let it heal up properly before running or it will flare up again. Speak to GP - it may be something else?

I went to see GP who did mention bursitis as a possiblity, but he reckoned that I had probably just 'annoyed the muscle'. So recommended high strength ibuprofen to start with, but gave me a prescription for some stronger anti-inflamatories to use if I needed them. Ibuprofen was quite good. Good enough to go for a 6 mile run on Sunday (DH ranting at me like mad all the time I was getting ready). Did OK.... the pain was nagging but not bad. I kept the speed down and ran a flat route. No ill-effects today. Fingers crossed...

Thanks milliways. But I spoke to soon . Tried to do my 4.5 mile run last night and ended up walking a lot of it. I'm going to carry on with the ibuprofen and cut out my Thursday run and see how it goes then.
