endoscopy - sedation or not?

Booked in next week under 2ww. I'm not particulary nervous of medical procedures but happy to make it easier. However I'm just concerned that if I am sedated I won't be alert enough to understand what is said to me afterwards. They said they would discuss findings after although obv if there is a biopsy they won't have the result of that.

When I had an endoscopy 2 years ago it was done via my nose rather than mouth. I had no sedation and my throat was numbed. Advantage of going via nose there was no gagging reflex - I have a very strong gagging reflex normally.

That’s only as far as your oesophagus so no good for stomach/duodenum!

@JustDanceAddict definitely went to duodenum via nose. Have attached part of the report. Much better via nose.

I had sedation and throat spray. I still remember gagging but was able to remember I was warned about it so was able to let them get on with it.

Yep the fentanyl and midazolam mix is the only legal high I have experienced. Lovely jubbly.

keyboardkat · 11/06/2023 16:44

Oh and I have NEVER had an illegal high either!

This was my question on here last year. I ended up having just throat spray and no sedation. It was very unpleasant for around 2 minutes! I'm not going to lie I can see why most say sedated, it's awful. But I'm glad I chose not to because I could go home after. They take biopsies and tell you what they can see. I had a letter within 3 days asking to contact my doctors because I had bacteria in my stomach and would need antibiotics for a week. Good luck OP.

@ElinoristhenewEnid - interesting. I thought it was only throat/oesophagus that could be examined this way.

DrCoconut · 11/06/2023 19:34

I had mine with no sedation. The throat spray is horrible tasting and feels weird but the thought of the procedure was far worse than actually having it for me. And I could leave and get on with my day after.

MyNameisMathilda · 12/06/2023 00:22

Yup both ends and sedated. It was fentanyl the last time.

LilacRos · 12/06/2023 16:03

So all done. I wasn't anxious or nervous beforehand. I was there 5 hours as there were "delays".
In the end I was offered throat spray OR sedation, not both. I had sedation and it was midazolam. I didn't feel remotely sedated, fully aware only noticed slight dizziness about an hour later. Plenty of gagging but perhaps the sedation makes you mind less about gagging?
Anyway they found lots of inflamation, a small haitus hernia and took samples for biopsy. I'll know more in a couple of weeks.

@keyboardkat I had surgery 4 years ago. Asked for pre-med which they forgot until 5 minutes before I had the anasthetic. I was high as a kite for hours after. My poor family were waiting anxiously to hear from me and there I was enjoying the trip.
